VW hand-draws a Dublin billboard in pencil to prove its zero-carbon ID cars

A traditional Dublin signwriter drew a 48-sheet billboard by hand in pencil, in situ, so the ad's production itself made VW's zero-carbon claim.

What it had to solve

Volkswagen's ID.3 and ID.4 were Ireland's best-selling all-electric cars in 2021, delivered with a net carbon-neutral balance. As rival brands brought their own EVs to Ireland, VW needed to remind buyers what the ID. range stood for, a real path to zero carbon, in a way that felt true rather than stated.

How it works

Volkswagen's ID.3 and ID.4 were Ireland's best-selling all-electric cars in 2021, and the brand's pitch was that the range arrives with a net carbon-neutral balance. The problem: every rival now launching an EV could say something similar, so the claim needed to be felt rather than merely stated.

BBDO Dublin's answer was to make the ad's production the argument. Jon Berkeley of Mack Signs, a traditional Dublin signwriter, was commissioned to hand-draw an entire 48-sheet billboard in pencil, in situ and in real time. The drawing took two days, and the finished board remained in place on Macken Street in Dublin for a week.

The irony was deliberate: a pencil is made of carbon, yet this humble tool produced an almost-zero-carbon billboard. VW Pencil showed how a little carbon pencil could help point the way to a zero carbon future, and the work earned a D&AD 2022 shortlist, filed in the archive under Press & Outdoor.

Why it lands

  • The production method made the environmental claim physically true and visible.
  • Passers-by could watch the ad being made, turning the process into its own spectacle.
  • Hand-craft cut through a category spending heavily on slick printed and digital EV ads.
  • The carbon-pencil joke made the message memorable instead of preachy.

What it did

The poster's production was the argument: drawing by hand emitted a fraction of a printed campaign's carbon, and the making itself was visible to the city. The work earned a D&AD 2022 shortlist, with BBDO Dublin the only Irish agency on it, and is filed in the D&AD archive under Press & Outdoor.

What you can take

When your claim is about how something is made, let the making demonstrate it: a proof the audience can watch beats a promise they are asked to take on faith.

Since then

VW Pencil drew industry attention as both craft and sustainability statement: BBDO Dublin became the only Irish agency shortlisted at D&AD 2022 for it, and the making-of film circulated in award shows under the title 'Zero Carbon. Except for the Pencil.' The reusable core is that a brand's most expensive claim can sometimes be proven by its cheapest, most visible production choice.
