VanMoof S6 (2025): iconic frame, rebuilt inside — the only e-bike with iF Gold 2026
After bankruptcy, VanMoof's first all-new bike kept the iconic frame while rebuilding everything inside — and became the only e-bike to win iF Gold 2026.

What it had to solve
VanMoof's 2023 bankruptcy and the S5's unreliable electronic shifter had left riders wary of a beautiful bike they could not trust. After McLaren Applied bought the brand, its first all-new e-bike had to prove the design DNA could survive — and that reliability could be engineered under the same skin.
How it works
VanMoof, the Dutch e-bike maker whose 2023 bankruptcy became shorthand for the risks of venture-scale hardware, returned under McLaren Applied with a bet on continuity. Its first all-new bike, the S6 series, launched in Europe in June 2025 looking nearly identical to the S5 and A5 that preceded it — same integrated lights, same Kick Lock, same Boost button living in the same iconic minimal frame.
The creative decision was to spend the engineering budget where the brand had failed. The S5's much-criticized electronic shifter was replaced by a fully mechanical three-speed AutoShift hub that shifts by angular momentum, with no electronics to fail; wiring became modular so each component can be serviced individually; the anti-theft system gained more granular location tracking alongside Apple Find My; and every S6 carried an extended three-year warranty, priced from €3,298 in Europe and £3,098 in the UK.
The result validated the strategy at the year's top design award: of 3,440 iF Design Award 2026 winners, only two bike-related entries earned Gold, and the S6 was the only e-bike. The jury statement praised a design that 'retains and refines the iconic VanMoof silhouette while improving performance and user experience,' noting acoustic details that add personality despite the sleek, electronic functionality, and calling the bike 'a tribute to the liberating feeling of urban mobility.'
Why it lands
- It treated the outside as brand equity and the inside as the fix: identical silhouette, radically rebuilt engineering.
- Going back to a fully mechanical shifting hub removed the exact failure point that had made earlier VanMoofs unreliable.
- Modular, serviceable construction and a longer warranty answered the 'can it be repaired?' objection that bankruptcy had made existential.
- Winning the only e-bike Gold of the year turned the comeback product into a proof-of-trust statement.

Since then
After its European launch in summer 2025, the S6 series landed in the UK in April 2026 through 42 retail and service partners, in three colorways (Electric Blue, Drift Black, Pearl Mint). Co-CEO Eliott Wertheimer said customer and retailer reviews, press, and multiple awards had driven sales beyond all forecasts, and VanMoof framed the launch as the start of renewed expansion, including an eventual return to the US market.
