What it had to solve

Honda's robotics research — from ASIMO to UNI-CUB β — produced the balance and omnidirectional-drive technologies, but a mobility device can still feel like equipment. The Honda Design Center wanted a hands-free way to move that people of all ages would enjoy, and that would not mark the rider as someone needing assistance.

How it works

UNI-ONE answers by hiding the machine. Riders steer by shifting their weight; the Human Synergy Balance Control reads the lean and the Omni Traction Drive System moves the seat in any direction, hands-free. Concealed wheels, rounded forms and a compact profile distance it from wheelchairs and scooters.

In drive mode the seated rider rises to the eye level of standing pedestrians, so eye contact, moving alongside people and even holding hands feel natural. The 2026 Red Dot jury gave UNI-ONE Best of the Best, calling it an inclusive form of transport design that anyone can use — and Honda's recognition streak reached seven consecutive years.

Why it lands

  • The design solves the psychological barrier first: a device that does not look like an aid lets riders feel like participants, not patients.
  • Body-weight steering needs no hands, no joystick and no learning curve, so people of any age can move intuitively from the first ride.
  • Eye-level drive mode treats walking and riding as the same social space — the design goal was integration, not just transportation.
  • Concealing the wheels made the technology read as a friendly object rather than robotics, winning over a jury focused on human-centered design.

What it did

The Red Dot jury gave UNI-ONE Best of the Best 2026 in Product Design, praising an inclusive form of transport anyone can use, and the win extended Honda's run of consecutive Red Dot recognition to seven years.

After the Best of the Best award in April 2026, UNI-ONE went on display with the year's other winners at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, where the exhibition ran until June 2027; Honda positioned the device as both an assistive aid and an everyday mobility object designed to be naturally liked.
