Hyundai E3W & E4W reinvent India's rickshaw as an EV platform — IDEA 2026 Gold
Instead of another car, Hyundai and TVS Motor rebuilt the Indian rickshaw as a modular EV — seats that fold into cargo space, a ride height that clears floods.

What it had to solve
India's motor rickshaw carries people, goods and livelihoods through dense, flood-prone cities, yet it still runs on petrol and excludes wheelchair users. Hyundai's design studio joined TVS Motor to electrify the format itself — a platform that does the rickshaw's jobs rather than another passenger car.
How it works
India's motor rickshaw moves people and goods through some of the densest cities on earth, carrying drivers' livelihoods with it. Hyundai's response to electrification was not another passenger EV but a question: what would the rickshaw itself look like if designed from scratch as an electric, inclusive, climate-resilient platform? Its design studio and TVS Motor set out to answer it together.
The result is a family of two concepts — E3W with three wheels and E4W with four — sharing one modular architecture. A full-flat, barrier-free floor provides step-free entry and wheelchair access; fold-and-dive seating lets the cabin switch between passengers and cargo in minutes; adjustable ride height keeps the vehicles moving when monsoon rains flood uneven streets; and compact proportions with an angled windshield suit dense traffic while improving the driver's view.
Because the platform is modular, the same base can take on passenger transport, logistics and emergency roles without building separate vehicles. The concepts won Gold in the Concepts & Speculative Design category at the 2026 IDEA Awards, part of Hyundai Motor Group's 16-award sweep — a blind-judged signal that the rethinking, not the brand, carried the idea.
Why it lands
- It electrified the vehicle an entire economy depends on rather than adding another car to it — the format itself was the design problem.
- A flat barrier-free floor and wheelchair access put dignity and inclusion into the hardware, not into marketing.
- Fold-and-dive seating turned one vehicle into several, answering the rickshaw's real jobs: people, parcels and emergencies.
- Monsoon-ready ride height was designed for the streets where the vehicle actually works, not showroom conditions.
What it did
The concepts won Gold in the Concepts & Speculative Design category at the 2026 IDEA Awards — one of 16 honours for Hyundai Motor Group — with the blind-judging criteria weighing design innovation, user benefit, business impact and social responsibility.
What you can take
To electrify a vehicle that defines an economy, redesign the vehicle around its daily jobs — passengers, cargo, floods, wheelchairs — not around the conventions of car design.
Since then
First unveiled in 2025 and co-developed with TVS Motor for engineering input, E3W and E4W capped a year of validation with the IDEA 2026 Gold. Hyundai positioned the win as proof that its design ambition reaches beyond cars, and the concepts remain a reference for electrifying last-mile mobility without leaving accessibility or flood resilience behind.
