Tukas EV turns an exercise bike into a 2kWh home battery — iF Gold 2025

What it had to solve

Most households draw power only from the grid while exercise bikes turn human effort into heat and nothing else. Lithuanian startup Tukas EV — whose founder Jonas Navickas had earlier built Lithuania's first electric car — wanted a product that made routine exercise produce genuinely useful energy for homes, offices and places with unreliable grids.

How it works

The HR Bank by Tukas EV is a stationary exercise bike that is also a 2kWh home battery. The Lithuanian startup — founded by Jonas Navickas, who more than a decade earlier helped build Lithuania's first electric car — designed it around a simple observation: people pedal exercise bikes every day, and that kinetic energy is simply wasted. Store it, and a gym routine becomes a small personal power plant.

The bike hides a 2,000Wh battery and multiple inputs: pedalling generates an average 50–150W (up to 500W), and the same battery accepts solar panels and wind turbines, with built-in MPPT charging. Fifteen minutes of cycling fully charges a smartphone, an hour powers a laptop, and the full battery can run household appliances through a 230V output. The frame uses recycled aluminium, the side panels are birch plywood, and the Italian Napa leather trim turns an energy device into a piece of furniture.

Repairability is built into the concept: side panels swap in about a minute, components are replaceable, and the battery is designed for long-term use rather than replacement cycles. Tukas EV positioned the product for homes, offices, schools, camper vans and emergency backup, framing energy independence — not fitness — as the reason to buy.

The design won an iF Gold Award in 2025, the top distinction iF gives to only 75 designs each year, plus a Red Dot Award 2025. TechRound placed Tukas EV on its list of Europe's most innovative sustainability companies, and coverage in engineering and design media treated the HR Bank as a genuinely new category: an energy source you exercise on.

What it did

In 2025 the design won an iF Gold Award, iF's top honour reserved for just 75 designs that year, and it was also named a Red Dot Award 2025 winner. TechRound ranked Tukas EV among Europe's most innovative sustainability companies, and engineering and design media covered the HR Bank as a new product category: a stationary bike that doubles as a silent home power station.

The company continues to position the bike as a design object and an educational tool for sustainability as well as an energy product, and it remains one of the most visible European attempts to turn human-powered exercise into mainstream household energy storage.
