Touch Grass app makes doomscrollers literally touch grass to unlock apps
A Screen Time shield blocks distracting apps until the camera verifies real grass, turning the internet's favourite insult into an iOS lock.
Touch Grass
What it had to solve
The developer kept reaching for the phone first thing in the morning and losing an hour to doomscrolling. Habit blockers were easy to bypass because unlocking cost nothing; the fix had to make the unlock itself the healthy behaviour.
How it works
Touch Grass began as a confession: the developer behind the Hacker News handle risquer reached for the phone every morning and doomscrolled away an hour. Instead of another timer or lockout app, the fix took the internet's oldest insult literally — you cannot open your distracting apps until you have actually touched grass.
The mechanism makes the joke enforceable. Built in SwiftUI, the app uses Apple's Screen Time shield APIs, which let a developer replace the block screen a user sees. Opening a gated app demands a fresh photo of grass, verified by Google's Vision API; the developer emphasised it is machine learning, not an LLM. A picture, a screen or a selfie does not count — only real grass opens the door.
The idea landed because the enforcement is the product. In the thread, risquer confirmed the stack (SwiftUI, Screen Time APIs, Google Vision), said App Store review approved the app in roughly thirty minutes, and promised users would eventually choose what to touch — snow, sand or a tree for places without grass. Hacker News responded with 1,203 points and 268 comments in one day.
Why it lands
- The meme was the mechanic: 'touch grass' already means go outside, so the app explained itself in one phrase and made the joke work both ways.
- The friction is the feature: there is no bypass that skips the healthy act, because the act of going outside to find grass is precisely the behaviour the user needs.
- Vision verification made the gate honest: Google Vision checks that the photo really shows grass, so the app cannot be fooled by a saved image or a screenshot.
- The winter problem became a roadmap: users in snowy and desert places asked for other objects, and letting people pick what to touch turned a limitation into the next feature.
What it did
The Show HN of 24 February 2025 drew 1,203 points and 268 comments. Commenters asked for snow and desert modes, joke services appeared within hours (a 'grass-touching verification service' and a 'touching grass generator'), and dozens said they would install it — an outsized response for a two-line idea.
What you can take
A restriction that demands a physical act beats one that demands willpower: when unlocking requires the healthy behaviour itself, the friction stops being the enemy and becomes the point.
Since then
Inside the thread the concept bred instant parodies: one commenter linked a 'grass-touching verification service', another announced a 'touching grass generator', and the developer joined the joke with a mock acronym. Requests ranged from an Android port to a 'touch bear' winter mode. risquer said customisation of the required object was on the roadmap. As collected in September 2026 the touchgrass.now site remained live, still selling the same two-line pitch: touch grass before you scroll.
