Taobao Mall Turned Singles' Day into a Shopping Festival
Zhang used 11.11 to promote Taobao Mall; 27 brands, 52 million yuan in sales.

What it had to solve
In October 2009, Alibaba had just completed the brand upgrade of Taobao Mall (predecessor of Tmall), urgently needing to convey a positive signal to the outside world and boost morale internally; November 11 was then only a self-deprecating day for single young people, unrelated to shopping.
How it works
On November 11, 2009, Taobao Mall (predecessor of Tmall) celebrated Double 11 for the first time: 27 brands participated in an everything-50%-off promotion, and 24-hour transactions reached 52 million yuan, far above daily transaction volume. The event originated because in October 2009 Taobao Mall had just completed a brand upgrade and urgently needed an event to send a signal to the outside world and boost morale internally.
Daniel Zhang's team, drawing on the United States' 'Cyber Monday', renamed November 11, then a self-deprecating day belonging only to single young people, as the 'Singles' Shopping Festival' (光棍购物节). They invited dozens of media outlets from across the country and announced the start of the event in a large conference room stocked with snacks and drinks—no one expected this to be the starting point of what would later become the world's largest shopping festival.
The following year, Double 11 transactions reached 936 million yuan, nearly a 20-fold increase, with 711 stores participating; Alipay's (支付宝) servers were once overwhelmed and crashed. In 2012, Taobao's entire network recorded 19.2 billion yuan in single-day transactions. Double 11 thereafter became a national-level consumption phenomenon, and platforms such as JD.com (京东) and Pinduoduo (拼多多) all followed.
Why it lands
- Ready-made time asset: Singles' Day already carried young people and emotion, so brands did not need to educate users on a new concept, only give an old day a new use.
- Extremely simple rule: the four-character phrase 'everything 50% off' was understood by everyone, and the participation threshold was low enough that 27 brands dared to join.
- Momentum by borrowing momentum: the upgraded platform needed a major event to prove itself to the outside world, and a low-cost promotion happened to provide the narrative.
- Fixed annual anticipation: turning a promotion into a date makes users count down themselves, and traffic costs fall year by year.
What it did
The first event generated 52 million yuan in full-day transactions, far exceeding daily transaction volume; in 2010 it reached 936 million yuan, and in 2012 Taobao's (淘宝) entire network reached 19.2 billion yuan. Double 11 (双11) went from Singles' Day into China's and even the world's largest shopping festival, with the whole industry following suit.
What you can take
Renaming an existing day with a simple rule can turn attention into transactions.
Since then
After 2012, Double 11 changed from a Taobao Mall event into an annual campaign for e-commerce across the whole network: platforms such as JD.com, Suning (苏宁), and Pinduoduo all followed, and single-day transaction volumes continued to set new records at the hundred-billion-yuan level. By 2019, CNR (央广网) had already described Double 11 as 'large platforms routinely starting at hundreds of billions of yuan in transaction volume'; at the same time it matured infrastructure such as mobile payments and smart logistics, and became a sample for global research on Chinese e-commerce.
