What it had to solve

Teenage Engineering's Pocket Operators proved cheap samplers could be fun, but the tiny PO-33 was hard to use and fragile. The team wanted a classic performance sampler inspired by the Akai MPC 3000 and E-Mu SP-1200 — affordable, portable and deliberately limited.

How it works

In November 2023 Teenage Engineering dropped the EP-133 K.O. II, a $299 sampler-sequencer it calls 'the fastest, punchiest and most affordable sampler in its class.' It evolved the cult-favorite PO-33 K.O! Pocket Operator into a proper instrument: 999 sample slots, built-in microphone and speaker, high-resolution sequencer, MIDI and sync ports, and a pressure-sensitive fader that triggers 'punch-in' effects — all running on four AAA batteries or USB-C.

The idea, says co-founder and head of hardware David Eriksson, was not market research but taste: 'We're not at all market-driven... I think we're probably the opposite.' Inspired by classic samplers like the Akai MPC 3000 and E-Mu SP-1200, the team deliberately kept the machine limited — small memory, 12-voice polyphony, fixed workflows — so that, as Eriksson put it, 'you end up just testing 14 new plugins' instead of making music. The machine was designed as an instrument for a computer-less studio, going from idea to track while playing.

The launch was a hit and a stumble at once: the first batch sold out, with the next months away, but 'Fadergate' erupted as some units shipped with broken faders. Eriksson traced part of the problem to the packaging — the 10-inch EP-sized box made stores treat it like a vinyl record and ship it unpadded — and TE rebuilt the packaging and added robotic factory calibration. The K.O. II still became the recommended gateway beat machine, and TE kept improving it with firmware updates via a browser updater.

Why it lands

  • It packages everything needed to make a beat — mic, speaker, samples, sequencer, effects — into one battery-powered box, removing the computer from the creative loop.
  • Limitations are framed as a feature: fixed decisions reduce fatigue and give the machine 'a vibe,' echoing why people pay fortunes for limited vintage gear.
  • The $299 price made Teenage Engineering's design language affordable, expanding the audience far beyond the usual sampler buyer.
  • The 10-inch EP-style packaging and boxing-themed Muhammad Ali launch made the product itself feel like a collectible, not just electronics.

What it did

Demand exceeded expectations and the first batch sold out with restocks months away. The launch glitch 'Fadergate' (some faders arrived broken) forced TE to redesign packaging and add factory robotics; the K.O. II still became the default $300 beat-making recommendation — 'the fastest, punchiest and most affordable sampler in its class.'

What you can take

Deliberate limits can be the product: constrain the tool so creative decisions are made for the musician, keep it fast and fun, and price it for a much bigger audience than the niche.

Since then

TE responded to Fadergate by redesigning packaging (they now test boxes by throwing them at walls), adding robotic fixtures that calibrate every fader and key at the factory, and shipping firmware updates through a web updater. Demand kept the K.O. II in production, and its list price later rose to $329. The machine became a fixture in beat-making tutorials and a common first sampler for a new generation, while 'Fadergate' entered the community lexicon as a cautionary tale about shipping hardware fast.
