Striped-shirt fit checks become a scoliosis screening tool - MAD STARS 2025 Grand Prix
MullenLowe TREYNA turns the striped-shirt fit check into a scoliosis self-check - TikTok trend becomes a free early screening tool.
MullenLowe TREYNA · Scoliosis Philippines
What it had to solve
Scoliosis, a sideways curvature of the spine, is most treatable when caught in adolescence, but most Filipino teenagers never get screened and a public-health campaign has almost no media budget. MullenLowe TREYNA was asked to spark awareness with Scoliosis Philippines, the Department of Health and the Philippine Spine Society.
How it works
In the Philippines, scoliosis is most treatable when spotted early in adolescence, yet most teenagers never get screened. MullenLowe TREYNA's answer for Scoliosis Philippines was not a scare campaign but a hijack: it took the Gen Z 'fit check' video trend — teenagers filming themselves in striped shirts — and turned the stripes into a visible gauge of spinal curvature.
The mechanics are almost too simple to be an ad: a striped shirt is already a fashion staple, so any teen can self-check by filming or looking in a mirror; if the stripes appear to curve, it is a reason to see a specialist. TikTok creators carried the message, and the campaign partnered with the Department of Health and the Philippine Spine Society to connect the trend to real screening.
The campaign won the Grand Prix of the Year in the PSA category at MAD STARS 2025 and the Philippines' only Gold at the New York Festivals Advertising Awards 2025 (Social Media & Influencer: Small Budget/Big Idea). As MullenLowe TREYNA chief creative officer Abi Aquino put it, the work proved that 'accessibility doesn't have to be complicated or expensive'.
Its significance is the inversion of a usual public-health playbook: rather than spending money to interrupt young people's feeds with medical warnings, the campaign made the content young people already create — the striped-shirt fit check — carry the diagnostic value.
Why it lands
- The striped shirt is already a Gen Z fashion staple, so the self-check requires zero new behaviour — just a mirror and a camera.
- Making the stripes the diagnostic turns a fun video into a personal health moment without medical jargon or fear.
- TikTok creators supplied the distribution, so a Small Budget/Big Idea campaign reached a national audience.
- It reframed scoliosis screening from a clinic visit into something teenagers already do for fun.
What it did
Won the Grand Prix of the Year (PSA) at MAD STARS 2025 and the only Gold for the Philippines at New York Festivals Advertising Awards 2025 in the Small Budget/Big Idea category, turning a no-budget awareness brief into a nationally recognised screening movement.
What you can take
When a health message has no budget, borrow the behaviour people already love: attach the diagnostic to a viral trend, and the trend itself becomes the distribution.
Since then
The campaign became the reference PSA of the 2025 Asian awards cycle: MAD STARS named it Grand Prix of the Year (PSA), with the jury praising its simplicity, freshness and scale, and New York Festivals gave it the Philippines' only Gold of the year. For MullenLowe TREYNA it became the proof point that a small-budget idea rooted in a cultural truth can outperform media spending.
