How it works
Pharmaceutical shipping long ran on 'pack-and-pray' logistics: medicines packed in single-use foam boxes with melting ice, shipped blind, and discarded on arrival. Temperature excursions were an accepted risk — one that Ember LifeSciences put at an estimated $35 billion a year globally. The company, spun out of the temperature-control brand behind the Ember Mug, decided the fix was not a better cooler but a better container: a reusable, connected box designed as a product in its own right.
The Ember Cube 2 keeps payloads between 2°C and 8°C for more than 72 hours using vacuum insulation and reusable phase-change gel packs. GPS, temperature and humidity sensors feed a cloud dashboard, where shippers watch an entire fleet of cubes in real time and receive alerts for delays, lid openings and low cooling energy. Proprietary software even generates the shipping label on an e-paper display, replacing printed labels. The cube is modular, comes in multiple sizes, and is designed to be reused hundreds of times.
In April 2026 the company launched the Cube 2 commercially and announced it had won Red Dot's Best of the Best in Product Design, placing it alongside past honorees such as Apple and Polestar. A month later, strategic investments raised the company's Series A to $27 million, with distributors and pharmacies including CVS Health and Cardinal Health among its customers.

- It reframed the design problem from improving disposable packaging to building a durable, reusable product around the shipping box itself.

Since then
After the April 2026 launch and Red Dot award, Ember LifeSciences raised its Series A to $27M in May 2026, then announced a capital and business alliance with Japanese distributor Alfresa in July 2026. The original Ember Cube had already been named a 2024 TIME Invention of the Year and a 2024 Fast Company World Changing Idea; the Cube 2 extended that design-led strategy to the commercial cold-chain market.
