What it had to solve
For years Replit was a browser-based coding environment. The gap it identified in 2024: AI models were great at writing code, but real software also needs a dev environment, dependencies, a database and deployment — steps users still had to handle by hand.
How it works
In September 2024 Replit launched Replit Agent, an AI system that can create and deploy applications. Founder Amjad Masad framed the problem in one tweet: 'AI is incredible at writing code, but that's not enough to create software — you need to set up a dev environment, install packages, configure a DB, and, if lucky, deploy. It's time to automate all this.'
A user describes an app in a few sentences and the agent works like a pair programmer — configuring the environment, installing dependencies, executing code — from a laptop or the Replit mobile app. Replit advised describing the app descriptively and letting the agent choose the technology rather than specifying a language or framework; users could inspect the code and deploy it themselves.
The launch produced instant demo evidence: a professor posted that an anagram game he prompted from his phone took about three minutes to prototype and run, with the agent picking the tech stack. Replit positioned the agent as making 'everyone benefit regardless of their technical experience,' available in early access to Replit Core subscribers.

Since then
In December 2024 Replit took Agent out of early access, added screenshot-to-app via React, native database and secret management, and a checkpoint-based billing model, pitching it as true end-to-end software creation 'just by having a conversation.' The prompt-to-deployed-app pattern quickly became the shape of AI coding tools across the industry.
