Raycast puts AI inside the command palette — Quick AI, AI Chat, AI Commands (2023)

Raycast made GPT-3.5 part of the launcher: ask from the search bar, chat in a floating window, or turn text into automations.

Raycast

The ideaPut the LLM where the user already is: one hotkey summons a launcher that can answer, chat, or turn selected text into a reusable automation.substantial

What it had to solve

Raycast was a 100,000-user macOS launcher built on keyboard shortcuts; AI tools lived in separate browser tabs and broke that flow.

How it works

In May 2023 Raycast, the keyboard-first launcher for macOS, shipped Raycast Pro and with it Raycast AI: the first serious attempt to put an LLM inside the command palette rather than beside it. Quick AI answered one-off questions straight from the search bar, AI Chat kept longer conversations in a floating, always-on-top window, and AI Commands let users turn selected text into repeatable automations with plain-language instructions.

The design bet was that productivity AI belongs where the user already is. Raycast was used daily by over 100,000 people and had more than 1,000 extensions, so the AI was layered onto an existing muscle memory: summon, type, act. Beta testers had generated over 700 million words in the weeks before the public launch, and Raycast described the change as the start of an AI-powered future for desktop productivity.

The move also reframed the business: a previously free app introduced an $8-per-month Pro tier that bundled AI, cloud sync, custom themes, and unlimited clipboard history, while keeping the core launcher and extensions free. Power users got a paid path to an AI assistant that lived inside their most-used tool.

Why it lands

  • AI was embedded in an existing workflow — the hotkey launcher — instead of shipped as a separate app users had to remember to open.
  • Three escalating depths (answer, chat, command) let users start with a question and grow into building their own automations.
  • AI Commands made natural language a scripting surface, so non-programmers could automate text tasks.
  • A subscription let the company pay for GPT-3.5/GPT-4 API costs while keeping the free product intact.

What it did

AI beta testers generated 700+ million words before launch; AI Commands became a template for prompt-as-feature design across desktop apps.

What you can take

A new AI capability earns its place when it rides an interaction people already do — here the command palette — instead of inventing a separate app.

Since then

Raycast AI became a template for desktop AI; the company later added GPT-4, web-connected Quick AI, and AI-powered extensions, then raised a $30M round in late 2024. The launcher-plus-LLM pattern it pioneered now appears in operating systems and developer tools across the industry.
