Raça Magazine's Black Characters fills tweets' unused space with Black culture

Brazil's biggest Afro-culture magazine turned Twitter's average 247 unused characters per tweet into a tool that completes posts with relevant Black references.

What it had to solve

In Brazil 54% of the population is Black, yet 84% of journalists at the largest newspapers are white. Raça Magazine, the largest publication on Afro culture in the country, wanted to give Black voices more space inside the media people already use every day.

How it works

Raça Magazine, the largest publication on Afro culture in Brazil, started from a hard pair of numbers: 54% of Brazil's population is Black, but 84% of journalists at the country's largest newspapers are white. Black voices were not absent from the country — they were absent from the channels where the country talks to itself.

Its answer was to reimagine the Twitter format instead of asking for attention. A tweet allows 280 characters, yet the average tweet uses only 33, so about 247 characters sit empty. Black Characters is a tool that completes a tweet in real time, filling the unused characters with a reference to Black people and culture that is relevant to the theme of what is being written.

The design makes the missing voice a structural part of the platform: finishing a thought becomes finishing it with Black culture. The reference lands inside the writer's own sentence rather than beside it, so representation rides along with normal conversation. D&AD keeps the work in its awards archive, which records the format idea rather than usage numbers.

Why it lands

  • A tool that works inside an existing habit gets used where a campaign asking for attention would be skipped.
  • The 280-versus-33 numbers made the opportunity concrete: there was already a stage of 247 characters on every tweet.
  • Because the reference matches the tweet's theme, it feels like the completion of the writer's own thought, not an interrupt.
  • Black culture becomes part of the message itself, so the audience carries the representation forward every time they post.

What it did

The tool turned dead space into representation: any tweet completed through it ended with Black culture already inside the ordinary feed, with no extra attention asked for. D&AD carries the work in its awards archive; the page records no usage figures.

What you can take

When a voice is missing from the conversation, use the medium's wasted space: insert the absent perspective automatically into behaviour people already have.

Since then

D&AD keeps the work in its awards archive, where the case stands on the format idea rather than on response figures, which the page does not record. What endures is the move: a publication used a platform's own constraints — 280 characters with 33 typically used — to give an underrepresented voice permanent space in the everyday conversation, so the missing perspective no longer depends on being invited.
