What it had to solve

A startup with no ecosystem can't win the app-phone war, so Rabbit designed hardware for a different bet: the interface is AI, not an app grid.

How it works

At CES in January 2024, Rabbit launched the R1: a $199 standalone AI device about half the size of an iPhone, designed with Teenage Engineering. It has a 2.88-inch touchscreen, a rotating camera, a scroll wheel and a press-to-talk button, in a loud orange body that deliberately evokes 90s handheld toys rather than another smartphone slab.

The creative bet was software-as-interface. Rather than building an app store and begging developers to support a new platform, Rabbit trained a 'Large Action Model' by watching humans operate existing apps like Spotify, Uber and DoorDash. The device then performs tasks through a single natural-language interface — no app icons, no logins juggled on the device — with the screen mostly there to verify what the model did.

Demand came before proof: Rabbit's initial run of 10,000 units sold out within a day, and more than 100,000 people eventually preordered based on a keynote and demos. The R1 became the most talked-about gadget of CES 2024 and turned 'AI-native hardware' into a category everyone else rushed to fill.

Reviews then caught up with reality: The Verge's verdict was 'nothing to see here,' finding the flagship LAM features mostly broken or missing at launch. The idea outran the engineering, but the product had already changed the conversation about what a computer could be.
