What it had to solve

Pavigrés, a Portuguese tile group based in Anadia, wanted a ceramic surface that could bring a living, responsive quality to facades and interiors. Inspired by the kinetic art of the 1950s and 1960s, the design team set out to create motion with pure material and geometry — no electronics or lighting effects.

How it works

KINETICA is a porcelain tile by Pavigrés, the Portuguese ceramic group founded in Anadia in 1978, that makes a static wall look like it is in motion. Inspired by the perceptual illusions of kinetic art from the 1950s and 1960s, the design combines a precisely calculated three-dimensional relief, synchronised printed graphics and optimised colour contrast so the surface shifts as the viewer moves past — with no electronics or lighting effects.

The development process was demanding: the team ran repeated prototypes, mould trials and raw-material adjustments to hold the balance between structural integrity and the visual effect. The tile was originally conceived in a 60 × 120 cm format, but testing showed the effect works at almost any scale, opening both facades and interiors. Installation demands careful alignment so the pattern flows continuously across surfaces.

Sustainability was part of the concept: all raw components are of natural origin and include a high proportion of recycled content, with premium minerals such as feldspar and kaolin plus special sands and quartz providing strength and durability. The Red Dot jury described the interplay of geometry, printing and colour as 'a striking illusion' that brings urban spaces to life.

At Red Dot 2026, KINETICA earned both the top honour, Best of the Best, and the Innovative Design distinction, marking it as a pioneering example of how mathematics, material science and art can meet in a building product.
