OpenAI Canvas: ChatGPT gets an editable side-by-side workspace for writing and code
Canvas opens a second window beside ChatGPT where you edit writing or code together — inline feedback and shortcuts — ChatGPT's first new UI in two years

What it had to solve
People used ChatGPT daily for writing and coding, but the chat interface was limited for projects needing edits and revisions — every change meant a new prompt and a fresh block of output.
How it works
In October 2024 OpenAI introduced canvas, a new interface for working with ChatGPT on writing and coding projects that go beyond simple chat. Canvas opens in a separate window, letting a user and the model collaborate on a project side by side — the first major update to ChatGPT's visual interface since the product launched two years earlier.
The design centers on editability: users highlight specific sections to tell ChatGPT exactly what to focus on, and the model acts like a copy editor or code reviewer with inline feedback. One-click shortcuts adjust writing length or reading level, polish grammar, add comments and logs, fix bugs, or port code between languages, and a back button restores previous versions.
OpenAI post-trained GPT-4o for four core behaviors — triggering canvas, generating content types, targeted edits and rewrites, and inline critique — reaching 83% correct triggers for writing and 94% for coding, and improving targeted edits by 18% over a zero-shot prompted baseline. The beta rolled out to ChatGPT Plus and Team users first.
TechCrunch framed canvas as part of a wave of editable workspaces from OpenAI, Anthropic and Cursor — a response to the limits of chat for long, iterative projects. OpenAI said canvas would reach free users once it left beta.
Why it lands
- Chat's reply box is a poor surface for iterative work — every revision meant re-prompting; canvas made the document itself editable
- Highlight-to-edit turned vague instructions into precise targets, letting the model act like a copy editor or code reviewer
- One-click shortcuts (length, reading level, fix bugs, port code) compressed multi-turn workflows into single actions
- Training the model when to open canvas — not just what to write — made the feature proactive instead of another mode to remember
What it did
OpenAI reported canvas triggered correctly 83% of the time for writing and 94% for coding versus a prompted baseline, with targeted edits 18% better; TechCrunch noted the launch pushed OpenAI into the editable-workspace wave already set off by Anthropic's Artifacts and Cursor.
What you can take
Don't just improve the prompt box — give the artifact its own surface. When iterative editing is the job, a separate workspace users can touch directly beats longer conversations.
Since then
Canvas grew from early beta into a core part of ChatGPT, and OpenAI kept extending it as chat products raced to add workspaces. The launch cemented the editable side-panel as the default pattern for AI writing and coding tools, a shape competitors had begun exploring months earlier and mainstream products adopted throughout 2025.
