LEGO's SMART Play makes bricks react to play — interactive builds without a screen

LEGO embeds sensors and sound into a classic brick so builds react to how they're played — the system's biggest evolution since the minifigure.

What it had to solve

LEGO faced a generation growing up with screens and interactive digital play. Its answer had to stay true to open-ended physical building — no app, no screen — while making bricks respond to play the way digital toys do.

How it works

LEGO's play was physical and open-ended, but children's attention was migrating to screens. The LEGO Group's Creative Play Lab spent years developing an answer that keeps play physical: a system of bricks that respond to how they are played with, announced at CES 2026 as LEGO SMART Play.

The heart is the LEGO SMART Brick — a standard-looking brick with a custom chip smaller than a stud, packed with sensors, accelerometers, light and sound sensing, a speaker with an onboard synthesiser and wireless charging, totalling more than twenty patented world-firsts. SMART Tags and SMART Minifigures pair with it so builds react in real time — lasers, engines and lightsabre sounds unlock as kids play — all without a screen and compatible with the existing LEGO System-in-Play. LEGO called it the most significant evolution of the system since the minifigure in 1978.

It launched on 1 March 2026 with three Star Wars All-In-One sets, and a full-scale X-Wing 'Galaxy Plays Back' experience let fans fly the Death Star Trench Run. The One Show 2026 gave the case its Best of Discipline (Grand Prix) in Brand-Side/In-House, plus a Gold in Products and a Bronze in IP & Product Design, and the X-Wing experience earned a Silver.

Why it lands

  • It upgrades the existing LEGO System-in-Play instead of launching a separate device, so every classic brick stays compatible and the whole catalogue inherits the technology.
  • The technology is invisible: no app, no screen, preserving the open-ended imaginative core of LEGO play.
  • Star Wars gave the first sets an instantly recognisable story to 'play back', making the abstract technology tangible at launch.
  • The full-scale X-Wing Trench Run let people physically experience the technology before it reached shelves.

What it did

LEGO called it the most significant evolution of the System-in-Play since the 1978 minifigure; the first sets launched 1 March 2026 in select markets. The One Show 2026 gave the case Best of Discipline in Brand-Side/In-House plus a Gold and a Bronze, and the X-Wing experience took a Silver.

What you can take

The boldest product innovation can be nearly invisible: embed the technology inside an existing compatible system, so every future product inherits it — the platform, not the device, is the idea.

Since then

LEGO SMART Play launched on 1 March 2026 in select markets with three Star Wars sets priced from $69.99 to $159.99, and LEGO said the platform would keep expanding with new sets, updates and technology. The case won The One Show 2026 Best of Discipline in Brand-Side/In-House (with Cambridge Consultants), a Gold in Brand-Side/In-House Products and a Bronze in IP & Product Design; the related 'The Galaxy Plays Back' X-Wing experience took a Silver.
