What it had to solve

Circus SE was building the CA-1, an industrial-scale autonomous food production robot that cooks without direct human intervention. CEO Nikolas Bullwinkel wanted a system people trust, understand and enjoy interacting with — not another intimidating machine.

How it works

Circus SE, a Munich AI and robotics company, was developing the CA-1 — an industrial-scale autonomous meal production robot that cooks without direct human intervention, aimed at labor shortages, food waste and operational efficiency in large-scale food production. The engineering was serious; the question was how people would feel about a machine taking over the kitchen.

CEO Nikolas Bullwinkel brought in German industrial designer Mario Selic, whose brief was radical functionality with architectural clarity. Selic drew from Edward Hopper's painting Nighthawks, the Airstream trailer and Bauhaus principles: clean geometry, minimalism, and a design that disappears into human surroundings while elevating them. The resulting CA-1 Series 4 went into serial production with the original design intent preserved.

In July 2025 the design was awarded Red Dot: Best of the Best — the highest recognition of the Red Dot Awards — in the Ready for Market category, reserved for products that have completed the design journey and are poised for commercial deployment. Circus joined the ranks of Google, Ferrari and Apple, whose MacBook Pro and AirPods Pro previously earned the same honor.

Following the October 2025 ceremony, the CA-1 was exhibited in the Red Dot Winner Exhibition at the Red Dot Design Museum in Singapore, putting a food-service robot on an international design stage.
