KAIST's flat-pack Solarstill Box makes clean water from sunlight — Red Dot Best 2026
A solar water purifier ships as flat sheets, assembles in 20 minutes, and lets communities run their own water system.

What it had to solve
Coastal, saline-alkali, and off-grid communities depend on contaminated water sources, while water purification equipment that relies on electricity and filter cartridges is both expensive and difficult to maintain; one-off distribution by humanitarian aid cannot build long-term capability.
How it works
In July 2026, the Solarstill Box developed by the team of Professor Bae Sangmin in the Department of Industrial Design at KAIST won the Best of the Best, the highest award in the Social Impact category of the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2026. This is a water purification and desalination device powered entirely by solar energy: internal stepped trays increase the evaporation area, contaminated water evaporates under the sun, water vapor condenses on the transparent cover, salt, heavy metals, and bacteria are separated naturally, and only clean water is collected.
Its most critical innovation is not the distillation principle but its form: the entire machine is made of Plaveneer flat sheets, can be transported in flat-pack packaging, and anyone can assemble it locally in about 20 minutes; if it breaks, only the damaged parts are replaced. The team conducted field research and co-design with World Vision in Tanzania, with a clear purpose—not to send a machine over, but to let communities install and maintain it themselves, turning one-off disaster relief supplies into a sustainable drinking water system.
After winning the award, the team plans to advance commercialization with World Vision and establish local distribution; the long-term goal is a cooperative-style operating model: community residents directly participate in manufacturing, distribution, and maintenance, so that water purification capability remains locally over the long term. What the Red Dot jury recognized was not only technical completeness, but also the judgment that 'design can solve shared human challenges and create sustained social value.'
