iQiyi turns a comedian's 'Passion!' into 2024's catchphrase — 10.7B Douyin plays
iQiyi's first stand-up competition made champion Fu Hang's 'Passion!' the mood word of 2024 and put sponsors inside the jokes.
iQiyi (爱奇艺)
What it had to solve
The King of Comedy Stand-Up Season (喜剧之王单口季) was iQiyi's first original stand-up competition, launching into a market with established rivals at a moment of national anxiety and short attention spans. iQiyi needed the new IP to break through culturally and commercially: sponsors demanded proof that comedy content could actually move product, not just views.
How it works
iQiyi had never made a stand-up competition, and the category already had established names. Its answer was not a bigger stage but a sharper emotion: a rookie-heavy cast of ordinary people telling stories about work, family and self-image, anchored by champion Fu Hang's explosive 'Passion!' — a word that captured the era's hunger to shout back at pressure.
The campaign treated the catchphrase as the campaign. 'Passion' was seeded through Douyin challenges tied to everyday life — travel, dance, work — until it detached from the show and became a 2024 mood word people used outside comedy. The stage clips traveled the same way, pushed across Weibo, Bilibili and Xiaohongshu so the audience found the moment before the marketing ever felt like marketing.
Sponsorship was designed into the format rather than bolted on: advertisers such as Nin Jiom and Chunfu green tea appeared inside sketches and punchlines, becoming part of the joke ecosystem. Because the show's audience came for emotional release, brands that entered through laughter read as fellow participants instead of interruptions.
The results made the case for comedy as a business channel: 10.7 billion Douyin plays, 5,356 hot-search mentions and a peak heat index of 9460, while Nin Jiom added 6.11 million yuan in e-commerce sales during the run and Chunfu green tea jumped to No.5 in its category. The show won two golds at the 2025 Golden Eyes Awards and a 2025 Roi Festival nomination.
Why it lands
- An emotional catchphrase travels further than a show trailer because people adopt it as their own expression.
- Seeding 'Passion' through everyday Douyin challenges let the meme live outside the show before the audience was sold anything.
- Writing sponsors into jokes made advertising part of the entertainment, so brand messages gained the show's goodwill.
- Casting newcomers whose lives mirrored viewers' own made the comedy feel like the audience talking, not a platform lecturing.
What it did
iQiyi's heat index peaked at 9460 — No.1 among iQiyi variety shows in 2024 — with 5,356 hot-search mentions nationwide and 10.7 billion Douyin plays that certified the show as an S+ hit. 'Passion' alone logged 4.2 billion Douyin plays and a creator challenge with over 500,000 submissions, and the show rated 8.2 on Douban. Sponsor Nin Jiom's e-commerce sales rose by 6.11 million yuan during the run, while Chunfu green tea reached No.5 share in the no-sugar tea category. The campaign took two golds at the 2025 Golden Eyes Awards and a 2025 Roi Festival nomination.
What you can take
An audience's mood can be the product: when a catchphrase becomes shared feeling, sponsors enter through the joke instead of interrupting it.
Since then
The season became iQiyi's template for comedy IP development: a year-end spin-off, Off Duty 2024, carried the same comedians and sponsor relationships into the Chinese New Year marketing window. The show was certified an S+ hit on Douyin and named the year's most popular comedy series on Xiaohongshu, and 'Passion' was recognized by official and mainstream media as one of 2024's defining words. The double gold at the 2025 Golden Eyes Awards established iQiyi's stand-up format as a repeatable commercial property rather than a one-season bet.
