Skibidi Toilet: a dialogue-free war epic made from game assets takes over YouTube
A no-dialogue toilet-vs-cyborg war serialized in Source Filmmaker Shorts — 10M+ subscribers by 2023, movie talks by 2024.
DaFuq!?Boom! (Alexey Gerasimov)
What it had to solve
Gerasimov, a Georgian animator with nine years of Source Filmmaker practice, wanted to ride a TikTok dance meme; instead of one joke he kept escalating it episode by episode, with no dialogue and no budget.
How it works
On 7 February 2023, Alexey Gerasimov — a Georgian animator who had been making Source Filmmaker videos for about nine years — uploaded an 11-second clip to his YouTube channel DaFuq!?Boom!: a singing head poking out of a toilet. The joke came from a TikTok dance meme, but Gerasimov kept going where a one-off meme would have stopped.
Using Source Filmmaker, Valve's free animation tool, and assets pulled from games like Half-Life 2, he serialized the joke into an ongoing war epic: toilet-headed villains versus cyborgs with TVs, cameras and speakers for heads. Episodes grew from seconds into 1–5-minute mini-epics, each escalation bigger than the last, with no dialogue at all — the story is told purely through action, sound and rising stakes.
By July 2023 the series had passed 10 million YouTube subscribers and a million TikTok followers, and critics were calling it the definitive war epic of 2023. In 2024, Variety reported 70+ episodes, fan-built Roblox games with tens of millions of plays, and film/TV development talks with director Michael Bay and former Paramount Pictures president Adam Goodman.
Why it lands
- Zero dialogue made it global: no translation, no dubbing, no reading — the escalation itself is the story.
- Serial escalation created appointment viewing inside a feed built for disposable clips: every episode raises the stakes, so viewers have to see the next one.
- The lo-fi, asset-recycling look turned a budget constraint into the series' signature aesthetic.
- Gerasimov — and later the IP's managers — let fans remix and build on the characters, turning the audience into the distribution network.
What it did
Dazed counted 10M+ YouTube subscribers and 1M+ TikTok followers by July 2023 and called it the definitive war epic of the year; by 2024 Variety reported 70+ episodes, fan-built Roblox games with tens of millions of plays, and film/TV development talks with Michael Bay and Adam Goodman.
What you can take
Constraints can be the pitch: the cheap tools and borrowed assets became the brand, serial escalation made each clip lead to the next, and zero dialogue made it global and remixable.
Since then
Skibidi Toilet became a licensing and development property: merchandise plans and film/TV development with Michael Bay and Adam Goodman's Invisible Narratives, where the strategy was deliberately to let fan creators play with the IP rather than issue takedowns. Fan-built Roblox games amassed tens of millions of plays, and the series became the reference point for narrative told entirely through short-form video.
