IBM z17: a mainframe designed for the AI age wins Red Dot Best of the Best 2026

IBM spent five years and 300 patents rethinking the mainframe — quieter cooling, tool-free access, halved carbon — and won Red Dot 2026 Best of the Best.

What it had to solve

IBM's next mainframe had to run enterprise AI at scale — up to 450 billion inference operations a day with a 1 ms response — while meeting carbon targets, global shipping realities and a more diverse, less expert operator base. The design team began with the goal of halving the carbon footprint and improving the user experience.

How it works

On April 8, 2025, IBM announced the z17, which it called the first mainframe fully engineered for the AI age. Powered by the Telum II processor, it processes 50 percent more AI inference operations per day than the z16 — over 450 billion a day with one-millisecond response — and was the culmination of five years of design and development that filed more than 300 patents, with direct input from more than 100 clients.

The IBM Industrial Design Program started with an ambitious goal: halve the carbon footprint and improve the user experience. Working with engineering, logistics, acoustics and sustainability teams, the designers gave the z17 rounded acoustic panels that minimize cooling noise, tool-free access, clear cable routing and a simplified exterior with fewer touchpoints — making a machine that stands for trust, performance and reliability also easier to install, service and live beside.

In the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2026, the z17 took Best of the Best and was the personal favorite of jury member Gordon Bruce, who praised the simplification of functions and touchpoints, the focus on sustainability, and the way the design virtually eliminates maintenance. Red Dot also profiled IBM's design program, quoting the goal of cutting carbon in half while making a regulated, mission-critical system feel intuitive throughout its lifecycle.

Since then

The z17 became generally available on June 18, 2025, with the IBM Spyre accelerator expected to add generative-AI compute in Q4 2025. In July 2026, Red Dot singled the system out as Best of the Best and profiled the IBM Industrial Design Program, making the z17 the public face of IBM Z's AI era and an example of sustainability-led enterprise product design.
