HOVERAir X1 PROMAX: a palm-launched 8K follow drone that needs no controller
Zero Zero Robotics' X1 PROMAX is a 196g foldable drone that takes off from your hand, films you in 8K while following, and lands back in your palm.
HOVERAir (Zero Zero Robotics)
What it had to solve
HOVERAir's 2023 X1 proved people would trust a small drone to launch from their palm, follow them hands-free and land back. For the 2025 PRO and PROMAX pair, unveiled at CES, Zero Zero Robotics kept that interaction and raised the camera bar — PRO at 4K, PROMAX at 8K — then pushed the flagship beyond early adopters by selling a bundle through Costco.com.
How it works
HOVERAir's X1 had already shown that a small drone could launch from a palm and fly itself around a person. With the X1 PROMAX, unveiled at CES 2025, Zero Zero Robotics kept that hands-free interaction and raised recording quality to 8K, turning a novelty selfie drone into a camera a creator could rely on.
The PROMAX folds to 105x149x34mm and weighs about 196g, yet records 8K at 30fps, 4K at up to 120fps and 48-megapixel stills through a two-axis gimbal. Preset flight modes — Hover, Follow, Orbit, Birds Eye, Dolly Track and Cycling among them — run from the drone itself, so it flies without a controller or phone; an optional Beacon adds manual control and audio capture.
It launched in the US at $699 with 64GB of internal storage, and HOVERAir then put an X1 PROMAX bundle on Costco.com at $699.99, adding an extra battery, combo case and charging hub. Reviewers confirmed the hands-free tracking worked through trails and trees, with the price the main hesitation.
Why it lands
- Removing the controller removed the barrier: anyone could unfold, launch and land the drone without learning to fly.
- The 8K sensor, 120fps slow motion and gimbal made the footage good enough to replace an action camera, not just to make novelty clips.
- Preset modes matched real activities such as cycling and skiing, so the product was sold for a use rather than a spec sheet.
- A Costco bundle moved it from drone hobbyists to families, offering one price for a complete kit.
What it did
A mountain-bike review found the drone did what it promised: it followed a rider through forested trails, avoided trees and returned to an open palm, with the price the main hesitation. HOVERAir's Costco launch called the PROMAX the world's first 8K self-flying camera, a step from direct-to-consumer sales toward everyday retail.
What you can take
Once an interaction is proven, the product grows by upgrading the output and widening the shelf: 8K made the follow-drone a real camera, and Costco made it a family gadget.
Since then
HOVERAir called the PROMAX the world's first 8K self-flying camera when it began selling the bundle on Costco.com, expanding beyond its direct-to-consumer roots into everyday retail. Mountain-bike reviewers confirmed the hands-free tracking worked through trails and trees while noting that prices climbed quickly once bundles were added. The X1 PRO and PROMAX pair gave Zero Zero Robotics two tiers — 4K at $499 and 8K at $699 — so the same palm-launch platform could serve casual users and serious creators.
