Żabka's Froggu: a virtual pet that grows with your purchases and unlocks store rewards
Żabka's app frog Froggu grows with your shopping and unlocks store rewards — 1 in 3 of 7.5M users played, +32% frequency, +24% ARPU, Effie Bronze.
Żabka (Żabka Polska)
What it had to solve
Poland's Żabka — nearly 12,000 convenience stores — runs its loyalty entirely through the Żappka app, with no printed flyers. As rival retailers added games and rewards to their own apps, Żappka needed a reason to be opened daily that a rival could not clone with a discount.
How it works
Żabka is Poland's dominant convenience retailer and runs a loyalty model without print: no flyers, no catalogues — the relationship lives inside Żappka, its mobile app. As rival chains began adding games and entertainment to their own apps, Żappka's engagement needed a reason to be opened every day that a discount could not replace.
The answer was Froggu: a virtual pet frog living inside Żappka. Shopping feeds the pet, care and missions develop it, and levels unlock rewards in the physical store — coffees, Żabka Nano visits, private-label products. The mechanic turned every purchase into an act of pet care, and the pet's personality let push notifications be a character speaking instead of a promotion interrupting.
A third of Żappka's 7.5 million users played: shopping frequency among players rose 32%, ARPU 24%, and more than 2.7 million virtual items were bought; 158,085 players reached the top level and half of all players were aged 24 or younger — the youngest shoppers a convenience brand can win. Effie Awards Europe gave 'Take care of your Froggu' a 2025 Bronze in Best of Europe: Retail, and the follow-on Żabu edition later reached the finals of the Global Best of the Best Effie.
Why it lands
- The mechanic sits inside the transaction: every purchase feeds the pet, so the app is opened at the moment of decision rather than petitioned beforehand.
- The pet is the brand's name made visible — Żabka literally means 'frog' — so the loyalty loop doubles as a mascot that a competitor's discount ladder cannot copy.
- Missions were wired to commercial targets (private-label goods, coffee, Nano stores), so engagement flowed into margin instead of stopping at a media metric.
- The pet earned the right to interrupt: because players liked the character, push click-through ran at 18.5% against a 15% app average — attention was given, not bought.
What it did
About one-third of Żappka's 7.5 million users engaged with Froggu; players' shopping frequency rose 32% and ARPU 24%; 2.7M+ virtual items were bought; 158,085 players reached level 100; 50% of players were 24 or younger; Bronze, Effie Awards Europe 2025 (Best of Europe — Retail).
What you can take
A loyalty program that measures activity will die of boredom: give the customer something they want to grow — a pet, a streak, a plot — and make the purchase the input, so the habit builds itself.
Since then
Froggu became a standing layer of the Żappka experience rather than a one-off promotion: by the Effie award, one-third of the app's 7.5 million users had played, and players under 24 over-indexed, pulling the brand into the next generation of shoppers. The same agency-and-chain pair took the follow-on 'Żabu' edition into the finals of the Global Best of the Best Effie in 2026, the award's prize for the world's most effective campaign.
