Heineken's Office Cleaners put QR vests on cleaners to buy late workers a beer

Heineken Argentina put QR codes on office cleaners' vests; late-working employees scanned them for a free Heineken at the nearest bar.

What it had to solve

Heineken's #workresponsibly platform pushed for healthy work-life boundaries. In Argentina, 81% of people said they work too much, and office cleaners were the only people who saw who was still at their desk after hours — a captive audience no classic ad could reach.

How it works

In late November 2022, Heineken Argentina launched 'The Office Cleaners' as the second chapter of its #workresponsibly platform. The brief was simple and hard: get people to stop working late and go meet their friends. Research cited by the brand showed Argentines were especially prone to overwork — 81% reported working too much — and the people who witnessed it every night were office cleaners, who could only start their job once everyone had left.

Instead of a media campaign, Heineken turned the cleaners themselves into the medium. It partnered with the seven largest corporate cleaning companies, covering 83% of private-sector offices, and printed QR codes on their vests and cleaning equipment. Scanning the code gave a worker a voucher for a free Heineken at the nearest bar — an app used geolocation to find it and gave a 60-minute window. In total, 40 companies and 50 bars joined the activation.

The activation ran in offices including Amazon Web Services, Coca-Cola FEMSA, Telecom, OSDE and Banco Credicoop. More than 7,000 QR codes were redeemed in the first week, cleaners got to do their jobs more easily, and Argentina served as the first market for an idea Heineken planned to roll out internationally.

Why it lands

  • The medium already lived inside the problem: cleaners are the only people present at midnight, so their vests reached an audience no billboard could.
  • Both sides won: workers got a reason to leave, and cleaners got empty offices to work in — the partnership wrote itself.
  • The QR code turned an abstract message about work-life balance into an immediate, concrete reward at the nearest bar.
  • Working with cleaning companies instead of buying media made the campaign nearly impossible to ignore or skip.

What it did

More than 7,000 QR codes were redeemed in the first week, in offices including AWS, Coca-Cola FEMSA and Telecom; Argentina launched the activation first, with Heineken planning to replicate it in other markets.

What you can take

Find the people already inside the moment you want to change — the cleaner at midnight sees overwork better than any billboard — and make them the medium.

Since then

The Office Cleaners followed Heineken's August 2022 activation The Closer — a bottle opener that shut down work apps when used — and extended the #workresponsibly platform into the physical workplace. Heineken described Argentina as the first market with plans to replicate the idea elsewhere, and Latin American advertising press covered the campaign as a model for brand activism on overwork.
