Brahma's answer to Carnival phone-loss: a free dumbphone you are happy to lose

Brahma gave Carnival revelers a free, deliberately basic 'Brahma Phone' — the phone you're happy to lose — winning El Ojo Vía Pública 2024 silver.

What it had to solve

Every Carnival in Rio and Salvador, phones are lost in the crowd by the thousands; revelers clutch their smartphones all festival. Brahma wanted to own the celebration itself, not just the beer at it.

How it works

Carnival in Brazil is the one week when losing your phone feels inevitable: packed circuits, costumes, street crowds, and a national instinct to protect the smartphone in your pocket. Brahma, AmBev's lager, looked at that annual wave of lost and fearfully clutched phones and did the opposite of selling security — it gave everyone permission not to care.

The Brahma Phone, created with Africa Creative, was a deliberately basic handset introduced with tech-keynote ceremony: a stage, an audience in Carnival costume, and the line 'the best phone in the world. For four days.' It shipped only what a reveler needs — GPS to find the bloco, calls, SMS, a ride app, an 8-megapixel camera and AmBev's Zé Delivery pre-installed — and it was distributed free at pickup points in Rio and Salvador, one per CPF, with more units available through Zé Delivery's loyalty points.

The value inversion is the trick: the phone is not a gadget to protect, it is the phone you are happy to lose, so you stop guarding it and start dancing. The campaign earned a Plata at El Ojo de Iberoamérica 2024 in the Vía Pública/Productos sector, and the distribution logistics quietly put AmBev's own delivery ecosystem at the center of Carnival.

Why it lands

  • It inverted festival value: offered an object designed to be lost, lowering anxiety the audience couldn't solve.
  • The keynote parody made the product the joke: 'the best phone in the world. For four days,' giving a built-in deadline.
  • Distribution did double duty: free pickup and Zé Delivery rewards put AmBev's logistics in the story, with the delivery app as the only app.
  • Time-boxing made it renewable: a four-day product tied to an annual festival can return every Carnival.

What it did

The stunt saturated Carnival week — limited free units, a dedicated pickup site and the keynote parody film on YouTube and socials — and the work won Plata in the Productos sector of El Ojo Vía Pública 2024, AmBev's home festival.

What you can take

Give the crowd the thing it is afraid to lose, not what you want to sell. A low-value product for a high-anxiety moment makes the brand part of the moment and installs your app.

Since then

Brahma Phone became AmBev Brasil's signature Carnival play of 2024, joining the era's wave of deliberately simple phones but with a distinctly local purpose — festival survival rather than digital detox. The work collected an El Ojo de Iberoamérica 2024 award (Plata, Vía Pública) and reinforced Brahma's claim on Carnival as its own season, with Zé Delivery embedded as the festival's logistics layer.
