Halide's Process Zero (2024): an iPhone camera mode with zero AI, zero processing

Halide's founders loved noise and wanted total control over shutter speed, but the iPhone's Smart HDR and Deep Fusion pipeline made those decisions for them — merging exposures and smoothing detail. They wanted a process that let the photographer, not the algorithm, choose.
How it works
In August 2024, Halide, the award-winning iPhone camera app from Lux Optics, shipped Process Zero: a mode with zero AI and zero computational photography. It skips the iPhone's standard image-processing pipeline entirely and renders a single 12-megapixel exposure straight from RAW sensor data, with natural grain, softer color and the dynamic-range limits of a classic camera.
The feature grew out of frustration. As iPhone cameras added Smart HDR, Deep Fusion and AI-driven pipelines, the founders found algorithms deciding how their photos looked — removing noise, merging exposures, erasing fine detail. 'A machine can only make objective decisions, but many technical decisions are inherently subjective,' they wrote, and their love of film-like grain sent them down the path of building their own process.
Process Zero is a single-shot process, 10–25× faster than ProRAW, and every shot comes with a true Bayer RAW negative. Halide bundled Image Lab, a one-dial developer, so users can re-develop exposure without leaving the app — a deliberate, 'batteries included' take on film development. It runs on every iPhone with iOS 17, not just Pro models, and users can switch processes mid-shoot.
Halide called Process Zero the first step toward Mark III and framed it as a statement against AI-heavy phone photography. Launch-day coverage dubbed it 'the anti-intelligent camera,' and photographers shared results under #ProcessZero — proof that a paid camera app could make restraint itself the feature.
