What it had to solve
Wall cabinets are shifting from hinged doors to flap doors for easier access and less risk of injury, and the premium segment demands fittings that are as invisible as possible. The challenge: fit maximum function into minimum depth so the furniture — not the hardware — is what you see.
How it works
Flap fittings — push-up doors used in wall cabinets — were increasingly replacing hinged doors because they are easier to access and reduce the risk of injury. But the premium segment demanded something more: maximum user-friendliness with technology that is as 'invisible' as possible.
Häfele and Kesseböhmer, two rival hardware makers, joined forces with the Flap Competence Center in Budapest to redevelop the mechanism from scratch. The result, sold as Free Slim and FREEslim, is anchored by a jointly patented U-spring whose geometry produces enormous spring force in minimal space, allowing a total installation depth of just 8 millimetres.
The fitting can be screw-fixed from inside or flush-mounted from outside, works on either side, opens at the lightest touch, stops securely in any intermediate position, and closes gently thanks to integrated soft-close. Interior cover caps come in four colours, and an optional electric drive is controlled by pushing the front panel, wirelessly, or by voice command.
The Red Dot jury awarded the fitting Best of the Best 2026, writing that its minimalist design enables 'discreet, elegant integration' and brings 'a sense of lightness and joy to everyday life'. For Häfele, the project is an 'invisible revolution': complex technology in an extremely slim, minimalist form.

The Free Slim / FREEslim platform launched in the premium flap-fitting segment with an installation depth of 8mm, freeing designers to build larger, cleaner fronts. The optional smart electric drive — triggered by pushing the front, wirelessly, or by voice — points the fitting toward connected furniture, and Red Dot Best of the Best 2026 validated the shared platform built by two rivals.
