GitHub Copilot Workspace runs the whole dev loop in natural language — idea to PR
Copilot Workspace turns a GitHub issue into an editable plan, code, tests and a pull request — a 'Copilot-native' environment from idea to merge.

What it had to solve
Copilot had made writing code faster inside the editor, but the start of every task — understanding an issue, forming a plan, writing the first code — was still on the developer. GitHub wanted AI to own that first mile.
How it works
On April 29, 2024, GitHub launched the technical preview of Copilot Workspace, a 'Copilot-native' developer environment where a developer goes from idea to code to software in natural language. CEO Thomas Dohmke announced it as the next step after Copilot autocomplete (2022) and Copilot Chat (2023): instead of finishing lines, Copilot would own entire tasks.
The experience starts where tasks start: a GitHub repository or an issue. Copilot agents read the codebase and the discussion, then propose a step-by-step plan; the developer can validate and edit the plan, let Copilot draft the code, run and test it inside the workspace or a Codespace, and finally file the pull request. Everything Copilot proposes — plan or code — is fully editable.
GitHub framed the product as lowering the barrier to building software: 'programming in natural language' could push the platform toward its stated goal of one billion developers, while professional developers spend less time on boilerplate and more on systems thinking. The workspace was also designed to work from any device, including mobile.
Why it lands
- It targets the actual bottleneck — starting a task — rather than the part of coding AI already improved.

What it did
The technical preview followed an early glimpse at GitHub Universe; GitHub called it 'a radically new way of building software with natural language' and tied it to Copilot's measured 55% productivity boost and the goal of enabling one billion developers.

Since then
GitHub rolled the preview out in stages: on December 30, 2024 it announced that all paying Copilot customers could use the technical preview, with organization admins able to enable it for their repositories. Copilot Workspace became part of GitHub's broader push from autocomplete toward agentic development environments.
