Images uploaded through the device's hotspot were cropped, dithered to 4-bit greyscale and contrast-corrected, so photographs looked like prints on the low-bit-depth panel.
The founder first built the frame for himself, but interest from others turned it into a kit: the device shipped with sample code, an image server library was published on GitHub, and buyers could point the frame at their own content. When the project reached Hacker News on 2020-12-12, the thread drew 175 points and 82 comments — enough traffic to take the maker's website down — and the owner answered questions about specs, hackability and local-only mode while the site recovered.

Why it lands
