How it works
Fairphone 6 (designed with Above Agency) is the Dutch company's most sustainable smartphone yet, built on a simple thesis: a phone should be repairable, fairly made and designed to last rather than engineered for replacement. Its iconic modular architecture lets users swap components, and the device contains over 50% fair and recycled materials by total weight.
The most visible creative move is the 'Moments' physical switch: it toggles between the full-featured smartphone mode and a minimalist mode built for focus and disconnection — a piece of mindful technology on the outside of the phone, always at hand. The jury of the iF DESIGN AWARD 2026 gave the phone its Gold award, arguing that sustainable design can be as exciting as anything from Silicon Valley, and singled out the detailing, colours and modular accessories.
Fairphone pairs the design with long-term promises — five-year warranty and eight years of software support — and the company is approaching one million users, with institutions such as Radboud University standardising Fairphone as their work device to cut hardware turnover and digital waste.
