What it had to solve
DJI's audience was expanding from pilots to vloggers and beginners who found drones intimidating; the challenge was making a sub-249g camera drone that felt safe to launch anywhere — including from your hand — without a remote.
How it works
On 14 January 2025 DJI announced the Flip, an all-in-one vlog camera drone whose headline feature is safety hardware: a foldable, full-coverage propeller guard — the first on a DJI drone — built on a carbon-fiber support structure that weighs about 1/60th of traditional engineering plastic at the same stiffness. Under 249 grams, it needs no training or exam to fly in most countries and packs into a backpack.
The interaction idea was to remove the remote from the equation. Flip launches from your open palm, connects to the DJI Fly app over Wi-Fi for one-handed vertical-screen control, and can be voice-commanded with the wake word "Hey Fly". AI smart tracking keeps the subject centered, a 3D infrared sensing system auto-brakes in low light, and noise reduction filters propeller sound from recordings.
Image quality kept pace with traditional camera drones: a 1/1.3-inch sensor with 48MP stills, 4K/60fps HDR video, 100fps slow motion, 4x zoom, up to 31 minutes per battery and O4 transmission rated at 13 km. DJI framed it as a device that could act as a multi-angle selfie stick or shoot landscape scenery — both near and far, people and views.
Why it lands
- It solved the real barrier for beginners — fear of spinning blades — with a mechanical design rather than a warning.
- Palm takeoff and phone-only control removed the remote controller, the second-biggest intimidation factor.
- Sub-249g weight kept it legal to fly in most countries without training, widening the market overnight.

DJI kept the Flip in its consumer lineup alongside the Mini and Neo series; the concept — guard the blades, launch from the hand, drop the remote — anchored the easy-to-fly side of its vlog drone line.
