Coway's AP-1018F shows pollutant content as a gentle ring of light
Coway's small-room purifier displays pollutant content as a softly lit circle and wraps recyclable materials in a timeless form — Red Dot 2019.

What it had to solve
A compact air purifier for living spaces up to 33 sqm had to make an invisible outcome legible: residents cannot see pollutant content, so the machine had to show it. The same design had to sit calmly in a room, not look like an appliance.
How it works
AP-1018F is a Coway air purifier for living spaces up to 33 sqm, designed around one fact: the thing it cleans — pollutant content in the air — cannot be seen. A round opening surrounded by a gently lit circle of light displays the pollutant content, so the machine's work becomes readable at a glance.
The rest of the design is about fitting into a home rather than standing out as an appliance. AP-1018F is made from recyclable materials and uses a soft language of form, with a finely perforated air outlet and five clearly marked push buttons for control.
Red Dot's jury praised the purifier for both aesthetics and functionality, describing the clear, compact design as elegant and professional. The 2019 win continued Coway's annual run of Red Dot honours across its appliance line.
Why it lands
- Pollutant content is invisible, so a circle of light gives the user a direct read on what the machine is doing.
- A soft, timeless form and recyclable materials let the purifier sit in a living room without looking clinical.
- Five clearly marked buttons keep the interaction simple for a device that runs continuously in the background.
- Making the feedback a ring of light rather than a screen keeps the display part of the product's calm identity.
What it did
The Red Dot jury said the purifier impresses in both aesthetics and functionality, calling the clear, compact design elegant and professional. AP-1018F won Red Dot Product Design 2019, continuing Coway's annual run of Red Dot honours.
What you can take
When the outcome a product manages is invisible, give it a calm visible representation: a ring of light that follows pollutant content makes the machine's work legible without shouting.
Since then
Korean business media reported the 2019 win as Coway's thirteenth consecutive Red Dot honour, part of the company's design-led run across air and water products. The award record publishes no sales numbers, so the case rests on the idea: make an invisible outcome visible while keeping the machine quiet in the room.
