Apple's Camera Control (2024): one button that senses click, light press and slide

Apple's designers kept watching people miss moments because getting to the camera and framing a shot took too long. They asked what they could build so users would "never miss a moment" — then designed the hardware and interaction around that job.
How it works
On September 9, 2024, Apple introduced Camera Control with the iPhone 16 lineup. It looks like an ordinary side button, but inside it combines three sensing technologies for the first time in an Apple device: a tactile switch for the click, a high-precision force sensor for light press, and a capacitive sensor for touch interactions.
Apple's designers Rich Dinh and Johnny Manzari explained on the Design Tangents podcast that they did not start by asking when or how to add a button. They started with the camera team's vision: "never missing a moment." The button is flush so the phone still feels normal in hand, with a small chamfer that makes half-press and full-press feel distinct, and materials chosen to survive IP68 water resistance.
The result is a control that behaves like a camera: press to launch, light-press to lock focus, full-press to shoot, and slide a finger across it to change zoom, exposure or depth of field. Later that year the same button became the gateway to Visual Intelligence, letting users point at a restaurant, a flyer or a dog to get context or trigger third-party tools like Google Search and ChatGPT.
Apple shipped Camera Control on every iPhone 16 model rather than reserving it for Pro, and opened it to developers so apps like Snapchat could use the same hardware. A feature that began as a question about missed family moments ended up as the new physical control language of the entire lineup.
