AeroPress: a garage-built coffee press becomes a global brew championship

Bitter home coffee drove inventor Alan Adler to build a simple plastic press — two years, 30 prototypes, and fans turned it into a world championship.

What it had to solve

Alan Adler, a Stanford engineering lecturer and serial inventor with 40 patents, was dismayed by the bitter coffee from home machines and found no single-cup brewer he could adjust. He decided to build the coffee maker he wanted, starting from the physics of extraction.

How it works

AeroPress is a manual coffee maker invented by Alan Adler, a Stanford engineering lecturer and serial inventor with 40 patents who previously created the world-record Aerobie flying ring. Dismayed by bitter coffee from home machines and unable to find a single-cup brewer he could adjust, he started experimenting in his garage in Palo Alto in 2003.

Adler studied which variables affect coffee flavor, then spent two years and more than 30 prototypes refining a simple plastic press: water and grounds steep briefly, and air pressure pushes the brew through a paper filter. He introduced the AeroPress at Coffee Fest Seattle in November 2005; the whole brew takes about two minutes.

The idea's engine was openness. Because the press was cheap, portable and adjustable, users developed thousands of recipes — different grind sizes, water temperatures, steep times and the famous inverted method. In 2008, coffee professionals Tim Varney and Tim Wendelboe held an informal three-person brew-off at Wendelboe's Oslo roastery; it became the World AeroPress Championship, still organized by fans.

What started as a garage project became a global hobby sport: the championship grew to national events in 35 countries by 2015 and to more than 5,000 competitors across 178 national and regional events by 2023. AeroPress, Inc. was acquired by Tiny in 2021 and has continued to expand the original design into new models.
