Zara Beauty builds its refillable makeup line on the slanted Z, recognised in D&AD 2022
Zara's first full beauty line (May 2021) turns the slant of the Z into a whole packaging system: refillable, modular and instantly recognisable.
Zara
What it had to solve
Zara (Inditex) launched its first full beauty line in May 2021, entering a category the fashion brand had never owned. The packaging had to feel premium yet affordable, stand apart from specialist beauty brands, and make 'responsible' concrete through refillable design.
How it works
When Zara launched Zara Beauty in May 2021 — its first full cosmetics line, sold online and in dedicated store sections — it was a fashion house entering a category where packaging had always been the product's voice. Specialist beauty brands traded on glossy, feminine codes; Zara's brief was to mix affordable luxury with utilitarian detail and stand apart.
The creative move was to build the entire range from a single pre-existing mark. Deconstructing the Z of the Zara logo revealed a signature slant, and that diagonal became the design system for all the packaging. Palettes were engineered with a versatile removable tray system, the lipstick case accommodated three products, and a stiletto-shaped case handled lip or eye products — refillable formats that made 'responsibility' physical rather than a slogan.
The result was a system, not a series of one-off packages: every format carries the same geometry, restraint and recognisability. D&AD's 2022 annual included the work, and jury member Susanna Barrett praised its consistency across the entire range, saying the minimal, powerful design made the products feel more premium and desirable.
Why it lands
- Starting from the Z's slant means the new category inherits Zara's existing brand equity — no new logo, no disconnect between store and beauty counter.
- Repeating one geometry across every format gives the full range coherence, so a customer who buys one piece recognises the next.
- Refillable cartridges, removable trays and reusable cases turn the launch's environmental claim into product architecture instead of marketing copy.
- Utilitarian restraint deliberately breaks beauty-category codes, which is exactly what makes an affordable fashion brand's line look premium and different.
What it did
The line's packaging earned a place in the D&AD Annual 2022, where jury member Susanna Barrett called it 'a simple, elegant and brilliant idea, executed with excellence and consistency across the entire product range' — packaging people keep out in the bathroom rather than put away.
What you can take
A brand entering a foreign category can export its own alphabet: one distinctive mark from the existing logo becomes the grammar that makes dozens of new products feel like one family.
Since then
Zara Beauty launched online and in select stores as a dedicated section from 12 May 2021 and became a permanent part of the brand's offer. The packaging system is preserved in the D&AD Annual 2022 as an example of turning a logo detail into a full product-range identity; the sources read record no separate sales figures.
