KOSÉ casts SEKKISEI BLUE's roof-tile jars from its own husk waste — Red Dot BoB 2025

What it had to solve

SEKKISEI BLUE is a holistic skincare series rooted in the East Asian herbal tradition of Kampō, and its packaging had to convey brand origin, product experience and philosophy. Japanese brands using kanji names often look overly traditional — 'like putting a throne in your living room,' said creative director Henri Harada — so KOSÉ wanted a traditional product manufactured in a modern way, while living up to the brand's long-running sustainability promise.

How it works

SEKKISEI BLUE is KOSÉ's holistic skincare series, formulated from traditional East Asian herbal knowledge in which body and mind are treated as one balanced system. The design brief asked for packaging that would communicate that Kampō origin and the brand philosophy without falling into the ornate traditionalism common among Japanese brands writing their names in kanji.

Creative director Henri Harada described the goal as a chair rather than a throne: the same function, radically more minimalist. The resulting caps and jars take their simple, functional silhouette from Japanese Kawara roof tiles, and every product in the 17-piece range can be nested and stacked with the others — a physical expression of balance that also makes the line read as one coherent system on a shelf. Soft curves make the forms pleasant to touch, and carefully developed natural colors orient shoppers across categories.

Sustainability was embedded in the object itself. The lids and caps are molded from resin containing adlay (Job's-tears) husks, a waste material collected while SEKKISEI manufactures its own Job's-tears extract. The husks burn as the mold reaches temperature, turning the resin brown; rather than treating this as a defect, the design team experimented with husk quantities until the natural discoloration matched the palette they wanted.

The jury called the series aesthetically composed in every respect, praising the tradition and authenticity of the natural products and the excellent storytelling of the design. SEKKISEI BLUE became KOSÉ's first Red Dot: Best of the Best winner in the Product Design category, and the DECORTÉ AQ Eau de Parfum, developed with Marcel Wanders Studio, took a Red Dot Award in the same cycle.

Why it lands

  • The container is the concept: roof-tile jars that stack into a balanced set make Kampō's holistic logic visible without a word of explanation.
  • Waste became material: lids molded from SEKKISEI's own Job's-tears husk waste tie the packaging directly to the brand's production and sustainability story.
  • A defect became character: the husk-induced browning was tuned, not hidden, giving each lid a natural tone no standard resin could imitate.
  • Modern restraint avoided the cliché: 'a chair, not a throne' let tradition feel contemporary enough for everyday bathrooms instead of ceremonial display.

What it did

SEKKISEI BLUE's packaging won Red Dot: Best of the Best 2025 in Product Design, KOSÉ's first ever Best of the Best, with the jury praising its consistent, elegant harmony and the unmistakable character of the roof-tile form; the same cycle gave the DECORTÉ AQ Eau de Parfum bottle a Red Dot Award.

What you can take

Embrace the manufacturing constraint instead of hiding it: a by-product that discolors during molding became the lids' defining trait, turning waste into the packaging's signature.

Since then

SEKKISEI BLUE's win marked KOSÉ's first Red Dot: Best of the Best in the product competition and its second Red Dot overall, after FASIO's 2021 honor in Brands & Communication Design. The series extended a brand that has run the SEKKISEI SAVE the BLUE environmental project since 2009 under the message 'Your beauty makes the planet beautiful,' and it was offered in six countries and regions including Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and France.
