The ideaTurn 'escape' into a real event: 30 tickets at airports, first come first served within 4 hours.substantial

What it had to solve

In July 2016, the WeChat public account Xinshixiang partnered with Flight Manager on a marketing campaign: Flight Manager had just completed financing and wanted to build its brand, while Xinshixiang needed an event that could go viral.

How it works

On July 8, 2016, Xinshixiang published 'I Have Bought 30 Airline Tickets and Am Waiting for You at the Airport: Escape from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou in 4 Hours', launching an event with Flight Manager: 30 round-trip tickets at Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou airports, first come first served for those arriving within 4 hours, destination unknown, depart on the spot. First 500 respondents got assembly point, livestreamed on Yizhibo.

The event went viral: reads surpassed 1 million in 3 hours, single-day follower gain exceeded 100,000, Weibo topic reads reached tens of millions. China Business Weekly noted Flight Manager's prior subway ads 'At this moment, be your own master' got a landing point, turning the popular topic into a participatory action.

Communication value was recognized, but execution was controversial: netizens exposed a suspected predetermined winner list; Xinshixiang admitted 'contingency participants' who didn't occupy the 30 slots. TMTPost criticized high threshold and low winning rate, saying Flight Manager's brand was almost invisible. Still, it remained a 2016 iconic new-media event.

Why it lands

  • Turning the popular phrases 'leave at a moment's notice' and 'Escape from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou' into airline tickets and airports gave the campaign built-in visual imagery.
  • The 4-hour time-limited mechanism created real urgency; readers were not listening to a story but were being asked to make a decision immediately.
  • Livestreaming the airport scene made the outcome uncontrollable and suspenseful; viewers watched 'someone really left'.
  • Publishing on Friday morning rush hour hit the peak of office workers' 'wanting to escape' emotion.

What it did

The article surpassed 1 million reads in 3 hours, gained more than 100,000 followers that day, Weibo (微博) topic reads reached tens of millions, becoming the most discussed new-media marketing event of that year; Xinshixiang's brand buzz rose sharply, but Flight Manager's presence as sponsor was thin, and the event was later exposed as having a 'contingency plan' (预案) for the list.

What you can take

Turning a slogan into a real time-bound action spreads widely, but unclear rules and sponsor invisibility can undermine business goals.

Since then

After the event, doubts about the 'predetermined list' continued to spread, and media such as Legal Weekly (法治周末) followed up with reports; Xinshixiang's Zhang Wei admitted there were additional contingency participants but they did not occupy slots. In November 2016, Xinshixiang launched 'Book-Losing Battle' (丢书大作战), which also ignited discussion. The event became a reference sample for Chinese new-media event marketing for many years afterward, and was repeatedly used by the industry to discuss 'communication success ≠ business success'.
