Wingstop survives the wing shortage by becoming Thighstop

Wingstop was built on wings, so when the US ran short it rebranded as Thighstop for eight weeks — sales rose 10% and Cannes gave it a Grand Prix.

Wingstop

The ideaWhen wings ran short, Wingstop rebranded itself as Thighstop for eight weeks and pivoted its whole business to thighs — the one cut the shortage had not touched.substantial

What it had to solve

In 2021 American restaurants faced an unparalleled chicken-wing shortage, and Wingstop — a brand built on wings — faced empty supply. Fans flooded social media with panic about lower quality, higher prices or no wings at all. The fix, agency Leo Burnett realised, was already on the chicken: America's preference for breast meat left the thigh the one part of the supply not yet exhausted.

How it works

In 2021, American restaurants faced an unparalleled shortage of chicken wings, one of the country's most popular foods. Wingstop, a fast-casual chain built on the mission of serving the world flavour, depended on wings for its menu and its identity, and fans flooded social media with panic about lower quality, higher prices or no wings at all.

Leo Burnett creatives Matt McNulty and Ben Pfutzenreuter found the answer on the bird itself: America's preference for chicken breast left the thigh as the one part of the supply not yet exhausted. In eight weeks Wingstop pivoted its entire business and launched Thighstop, rebranding the chain with rapper and franchise owner Rick Ross as spokesman.

The pivot worked commercially: year-over-year sales rose 10%, with 60% of sales coming from new customers. The campaign won the Grand Prix for Creative Commerce at Cannes Lions 2022 and earned a 2022 One Show honour as an integrated campaign.

Reel 360 set the achievement in context: Wingstop operated more than 1,731 stores globally at the time and had recorded 18 consecutive years of same-store sales growth. The wing-shortage campaign protected that record — and became a reference point for turning a supply crisis into a brand moment.

Why it lands

  • The fix was product truth: the thigh was plentiful because America preferred breast meat, so no supply-chain miracle was needed — only the courage to sell the overlooked cut.
  • Wingstop committed the whole brand rather than running a promotion — eight weeks as Thighstop made the message credible instead of looking like a shortage apology.
  • Rick Ross, both a rapper and a Wingstop franchise owner, gave the new name instant cultural permission and shareability.
  • Speed mattered: launching in eight weeks meant the brand answered while the shortage was still the national conversation, not after it faded.

What it did

Year-over-year sales rose 10%, with 60% of sales coming from new customers. The campaign won the Grand Prix for Creative Commerce at Cannes Lions 2022 and was also honoured at the 2022 One Show as an integrated campaign. Reel 360 noted the context: Wingstop operated more than 1,731 stores globally with same-store sales up 18 consecutive years.

What you can take

A supply shock becomes an opportunity when a brand treats it as a product question: the thigh was already on every chicken, so the fix was reframing and commitment, not apologising for scarcity.

Since then

At Cannes Lions 2022, Thighstop took the Grand Prix for Creative Commerce, cementing it as the year's model for supply-shock marketing. Reel 360 reported that McNulty and Pfutzenreuter later left Leo Burnett for OKRP, and that Wingstop put its agency account into review — a reminder that even award-winning creative work does not guarantee an agency's tenure. Wingstop itself continued its growth run, and the campaign stayed a reference point for brands that turn an external shortage into a reinvented offer.
