Heinz 'Mustard X Mustard': a sauce co-created with a producer named Mustard

What it had to solve

Ketchup carried Heinz's pop-culture fame while the mustard line sat unchanged in the US. Kraft Heinz's in-house agency The Kitchen North America, with Cashmere Los Angeles, found a collaborator the joke was practically waiting for: the GRAMMY-winning producer Mustard, a self-declared Heinz superfan who already owned a diamond-encrusted Heinz mustard chain.

How it works

For years Heinz's mustard stood in the shadow of its ketchup. In early 2025 the brand's in-house agency The Kitchen North America, with Cashmere Los Angeles, closed the gap with a collaboration that was, as the trade press put it, 'staring them in the face': the GRAMMY-winning producer Mustard, a lifelong Heinz superfan who wore a diamond-encrusted Heinz mustard chain.

Unveiled during the GRAMMY Awards, Mustard x Mustard was a limited-edition bottle personally mixed by the producer — Heinz's first co-created sauce in the US and its first new mustard product in nearly a decade. The pun ran all the way through the product system: a named collaborator, a named sauce, and a new corporate title, Chief Mustard Officer, for the artist.

The drop launched where the audience already was: on Mustard's own Instagram feed, where fans bridged the gap between music fandom and condiments — one commenter admitted not even liking mustard but loving DJ Mustard. The campaign took the Best of Discipline for Brand-Side/In-House at The One Show 2025 and rippled through hip-hop and marketing coverage.

What made it a case, not a gimmick, was that every layer was real: the product was real and sellable, the fan was a genuine superfan, the title was actual. The brand and the celebrity swapped roles — the artist lent his name to the product, and the product finally got to use its own name as a punchline.

Why it lands

  • The name collision meant zero explaining: 'Mustard X Mustard' is instantly legible to both condiment and hip-hop audiences.
  • A genuine superfan as partner made the act a mutual celebration, not a paid endorsement — his diamond chain proved his fandom predated the deal.
  • Making it a real product (first new US mustard in about a decade) gave the joke shelf life beyond the news cycle.
  • The Chief Mustard Officer title extended the gag into earned-media territory, giving press and fans something quotable to retell.

What it did

The collaboration won Best of Discipline for Brand-Side/In-House at The One Show 2025 for The Kitchen North America with Cashmere Los Angeles, earned pickup across hip-hop and marketing press, and gave Heinz a shelf product where the claim and the joke were the same object.

What you can take

The strongest pun is one the culture already paid for: Heinz found a real person named Mustard, then made the pun tangible as a product, a title, and a Grammy-week drop.

Since then

The limited-edition drop landed during Grammy week in February 2025 and sold through the campaign; coverage moved from hip-hop blogs to mainstream marketing trade press, and at The One Show 2025 in May, Kraft Heinz's in-house team took the Best of Discipline award for Brand-Side/In-House with Cashmere Los Angeles. For Heinz, the collaboration showed an in-house creative unit can out-pun outside agencies on a heritage brand — and that a condiment line celebrities actually worship is an asset most brands would kill for.
