Visit Sweden sells the country as a doctor's prescription — 8,100 downloads

Sweden becomes the first country 'prescribed' by doctors: deadpan films and downloadable nature, sauna and fika prescriptions drew 4.13B reach.

Visit Sweden

The ideaMake the whole country a treatment: position Sweden as the first destination doctors can prescribe, with a downloadable prescription built on nature, sauna and fika.substantial

What it had to solve

Visit Sweden, the national tourism board, faced a market crowded with countries selling monuments and spectacle, and Sweden has no single icon to dominate travel narratives. Three trends opened a door: the rapid growth of wellness tourism, doctors increasingly prescribing nature and social activities for mental health, and Sweden's consistently top rankings in quality-of-life measures.

How it works

Most destination marketing sells scenery, and Sweden competes against countries with instantly recognizable landmarks. Visit Sweden's insight was that the country's real asset is not a monument but a way of life that the world was starting to crave: balance, nature, social rituals and quiet — exactly what rising stress levels and the new fashion for nature-based prescriptions were making valuable.

The Swedish Prescription reframed the entire country as a treatment. A deadpan female doctor, always fully dressed and composed, recommended Swedish habits as clinical protocols from unexpected settings — a frozen lake, a sauna, a forest. The campaign borrowed pharmaceutical language, turning the classic 'side effects may include' warning into a list of positive outcomes like better balance and connection.

The idea was engineered for credibility: developed with senior researchers at Karolinska Institutet and supported by doctors in several countries, the campaign produced downloadable, evidence-based prescriptions built around Swedish rituals — nature, sauna, fika, culture and rest — so a bold tourism claim rested on genuine health science. The restrained tone gave the humor room to travel across languages without tipping into advertising.

The results made the case that a country could build a brand voice rather than borrow landmarks: 1,800+ articles in 70 countries, 4.13 billion in reach, EUR 26.85 million in earned media value and 8,100+ prescriptions downloaded, alongside double- and triple-digit lifts in destination interest across Germany, the Netherlands, France and the US. Cannes Lions 2026 gave it Gold in Creative Strategy, Silver in PR and Bronze in Health & Wellness.

Why it lands

  • Positioning a country as a remedy gives travelers a role in the story — they are patients being healed, not tourists ticking boxes.
  • The deadpan doctor and pharmaceutical framing made a wellness claim credible by treating it with clinical seriousness.
  • Anchoring the campaign in real research let the tourism board say something bold without being dismissed as hype.
  • Downloadable prescriptions turned interest into a concrete artifact people could keep, share and act on.

What it did

The earned-first approach generated more than 1,800 articles across 70 countries, a reported reach of 4.13 billion, EUR 26.85 million in earned media value and over 8,100 downloaded prescriptions. Destination interest rose 227 percent in Germany and 220 percent in the Netherlands, with brand perception up 185 percent in France and US destination searches up 79 percent. The campaign won Gold in Creative Strategy, Silver in PR and Bronze in Health & Wellness at Cannes Lions 2026, and France's hotel bookings to Sweden rose 28.3 percent year on year.

What you can take

When a place lacks iconic assets, reposition the category instead: offer a role in people's lives — a remedy — rather than another list of sights.

Since then

The Swedish Prescription became a reference case for earned-first destination branding and for building a consistent national brand voice: the same restrained tone was carried across film, social, out-of-home and PR in multiple markets, and the campaign collected three Cannes Lions in 2026 (Creative Strategy Gold, PR Silver, Health & Wellness Bronze) as well as recognition at the One Show and PRWeek Global Awards. Visit Sweden continued to develop the 'prescription' platform as a long-term positioning asset rather than a one-off promotion.
