Naked gives the hunger-thirst feeling a name — 'thungry' — and makes itself the answer

Instead of claiming it satisfies thirst and hunger, Naked names the mixed craving 'thunger' and builds the 'When Thungry Get Naked' platform around it.

What it had to solve

Naked exists in the limbo between food and drink: it is refreshing like a drink and satiating like food, and the brand says it is the only snack that satisfies both thirst and hunger at once. But the moment when people feel both had no name.

How it works

Naked occupies an odd space in the snack aisle: unlike other snacks, it exists in the viscous limbo between food and drink. It is refreshing like a drink and satiating like food, and the brand says it is the only snack that satisfies both thirst and hunger.

The creative problem was that people had no word for the craving they feel when both hit at once. Naked uncovered that need state, named it 'Thunger' and made it the foundation of a new platform, 'When Thungry Get Naked'.

The writing treated thunger as a complicated human emotion worth explaining — digging into why the feeling is confusing and comparing it to other complicated emotions people recognise — so a familiar experience that had gone undefined for a long time finally had a name, and a product attached to it.

Why it lands

  • Naming an unnamed feeling makes the problem real: once the craving has a word, people can recognise it in themselves and in others.
  • The name sits on the product's true position — a drink that is also food — so the coinage is the category claim, not decoration.
  • The playful 'thungry' spelling keeps an insight about bodily discomfort light enough to say aloud.
  • Treating the craving as a real emotion gives it the same status as feelings advertising already talks about, so the solution feels psychological rather than nutritional.

What it did

The campaign gave a universal but unnamed moment a word and made the brand the answer to it, turning a product position into language that people could recognise in themselves; the work is preserved in the D&AD Awards archive.

What you can take

If the product solves a feeling nobody can name, name it: a coined word turns an invisible need into something people recognise and repeat, and the brand that owns the word owns the category.

Since then

The D&AD archive keeps 'When Thungry Get Naked' as a Writing for Advertising entry, with Naked as brand and Naked Juice as client. The platform's durable move was lexical: whatever happened to the word in everyday speech, the campaign had claimed it for the brand's hybrid position between a drink and a snack.
