Tobacco Free Portfolios redraws 100 US brands as cigarette packs — 401ks fund Big Tobacco
Borrowing cigarette-pack design language, a charity redraws America's 100 biggest companies and delivers each pack to its C-suite.
Tobacco Free Portfolios
What it had to solve
Most large US companies assume they have no link to Big Tobacco, yet their 401k retirement plans invest billions of dollars in the industry every year — usually without anyone in the company noticing. Tobacco Free Portfolios, a charity campaigning for a tobacco-free world, wanted to shock the executives who actually had the power to change it.
How it works
Tobacco Free Portfolios, the charity founded by radiation oncologist Bronwyn King to remove tobacco from investment portfolios, found a silent contradiction at the heart of corporate America: nearly every large company believes it has nothing to do with cigarettes, while its 401k retirement plan invests billions in the tobacco industry each year.
The issue was invisible because it lived inside pension fund holdings that executives never see. To bring it into the open, the charity borrowed the design language and printing methods of real cigarette packaging and transformed the livery of America's 100 biggest companies into custom cigarette packets — each one a confronting symbol of that company's inadvertent tobacco backing.
The packets were delivered directly to the C-suite, the people with the power to change how retirement money is invested. What had been an abstract portfolio fact became a branded object on an executive's desk, impossible to mistake for anyone else's problem. The work was created with Clemenger BBDO Melbourne and recognized in D&AD's 2022 awards.
Why it lands
- The cigarette-pack disguise used each company's own brand equity to make the accusation feel personal rather than generic.
- Delivering physical packets to the C-suite reached the decision-makers a media campaign could only hope to influence indirectly.
- Borrowing tobacco's own warning-label design made the message self-explanatory — no copy needed to explain the point.
- Framing it as an investment issue rather than a health lecture gave the charity a new audience: finance and governance leaders.
What it did
Each company's own branding became an unmissable warning about the tobacco its retirement money quietly funds, put physically in front of the executives who could act. The campaign was created with Clemenger BBDO Melbourne and recognized in D&AD's 2022 awards.
What you can take
When an audience does not know it is implicated, hand it the evidence as an object: a company's own brand on a cigarette pack makes a silent portfolio link impossible to ignore.
Since then
Tobacco Free Portfolios carried the US push forward: in 2022 it announced a Clinton Global Initiative commitment to galvanize the American marketplace around tobacco-free finance, develop an advocacy campaign and engage leading US financial institutions. The cigarette-pack campaign itself entered D&AD's 2022 awards and remains one of the charity's most visible statements that portfolio choices and public health are the same fight.
