NerdWallet's 2074 musical has future selves sing about today's money mistakes

NerdWallet's anthem spot jumps to 2074, where people's 'future selves' regretfully sing about the financial mistakes they made when young.

What it had to solve

NerdWallet's campaign needed to position the company as the place to turn to for all financial decisions — and to make the consequences of bad choices feel urgent while they are still years away.

How it works

NerdWallet's new campaign had one message: the company is who you should turn to for all your financial decisions. The harder task was urgency — the consequences of bad money choices arrive years later, so acting today never feels pressing.

The anthem spot answered with an amusing short musical set in 2074. There, people's 'future selves' regretfully sing about the financial mistakes they made when they were younger, making the distant future a character the audience can already meet.

The intent was to scare people into action: if consumers saw themselves in the characters' situations, they might use NerdWallet to make smart decisions before it is too late. The campaign is preserved in the D&AD awards archive.

Why it lands

  • A singing, regretful future self converts an abstract risk into a character the viewer can imagine becoming.
  • Comedy and music carry the warning without lecturing, so the audience stays with the scare.
  • The specific regrets act as mirrors, letting viewers recognise their own behaviour inside the song.

What it did

The device gave a distant, easy-to-postpone risk a face, a voice and a song — making viewers feel the regret before they make the mistake. The work is held in the D&AD awards archive.

What you can take

Distant financial risk is easy to ignore, but a concrete, regretful 'future you' is not: personify the consequence and the decision to act now becomes personal.

Since then

The anthem anchored the launch of NerdWallet's new campaign, with the 'future you' idea carrying the message that the time to act is now. The film remains in the D&AD awards archive.
