Thorne turns biometric data into a shareable inner selfie

Thorne’s immersive installation used live brain, heart and respiratory data to create a personalised portrait of each visitor’s body.

Thorne

The ideaTurn each visitor’s live biometric signals into a personalised portrait they could share as an ‘inner selfie,’ making wellness visible from within.substantial

What it had to solve

Thorne wanted to shift the wellness conversation from appearance and surface routines to the body’s inner state. The experience had to make that abstract promise tangible and personal.

How it works

Most wellness practice starts from the outside: appearance, routines and surface treatment. Thorne wanted to redirect attention inward and make the body itself the next frontier of health innovation.

The Frontier Within used multiple biometric sensors to capture each visitor’s real-time brain, heart and respiratory data. It transformed those signals into a living, breathing interactive portrait of the visitor’s body.

The result was an ‘inner selfie’ that made an invisible state personal, visual and shareable. The experience also carried the encounter from an offline installation into an online format people could revisit.

Why it lands

  • It made wellness data emotionally legible by turning an abstract internal state into a portrait of the person experiencing it.
  • Personalisation gave visitors a reason to share the work without requiring a generic social-media message.
  • The online continuation preserved the immersive quality after the physical encounter ended.
  • The idea connected Thorne’s health positioning to a concrete interaction rather than a conventional product claim.

What it did

The installation turned wellness into a personalised data portrait and connected an offline encounter to an online experience that could be revisited and shared.

What you can take

When a promise is invisible, let people experience their own data as the proof rather than explaining the promise with generic claims.

Since then

The D&AD archive preserves The Frontier Within as an immersive, data-driven wellness experience. Its durable creative move is to make the inside of the body a medium for self-expression and sharing.
