Steadfast turns dirty cash counting into dark comedy — ADFEST Film Craft Gold Lotus

TBWA\Lintas and Ducktape Studios make Steadfast's cash machines deadpan comedy films — 'Dirty Money' wins a Film Craft Gold Lotus at ADFEST 2026.

What it had to solve

Steadfast Stationery makes cash-handling machines for Indian businesses, but selling a counting machine to people who still count notes by hand is a dull brief. TBWA\Lintas Mumbai and production company Ducktape Studios decided the way to stand out was to stop demoing features and start telling stories.

How it works

Indian stationery maker Steadfast sells cash-handling machines — note counters and currency detectors — to businesses that still process notes by hand. Advertising a machine is inherently dull, so TBWA\Lintas Mumbai and production company Ducktape Studios answered the brief with entertainment: films where manual cash handling escalates into dark comedy and the product arrives as the relief.

'Dirty Money' opens in a loud betting parlour where money is flying and the bookie is running the show. Struck by a sudden stomach emergency, he rushes to the only bathroom, drags the occupant out and locks himself in; a bundle of cash falls into the mess. The film cuts to an accountant calmly counting the same notes by licking his fingers, and the reveal lands: the Steadfast Note Counting Machine — 'Fast. Hygienic. Trustworthy.' A companion film, 'Don't Look Up' turns holding a banknote to the light into absurd consequences before presenting the fake-money detector as the smarter answer.

The craft-first approach travelled. At ADFEST 2026, 'Dirty Money' won a Film Craft Gold Lotus plus a Silver, and the 'Don't Look Up' script took a Bronze Lion in Film Script at Cannes Lions 2026 — at that moment India's only Lion of the day. The agency's argument was that a B2B machine placed at the centre of a great story, rather than in every frame, is what lets the work travel.

Why it lands

  • Putting the product at the plot's centre made a mundane machine the hero rather than a prop.
  • Keeping the machine off-screen until the reveal made the benefit land as a punchline.
  • Dark, escalating consequences gave a hygiene message memorability that feature demos never get.
  • Craft-first filmmaking let a B2B product earn attention in ad festivals built for big-brand film.

What it did

Craft-first filmmaking turned a functional B2B product into entertainment. 'Dirty Money' won a Film Craft Gold Lotus and a Silver at ADFEST 2026 in Pattaya, and the 'Don't Look Up' script for the fake-money detector took a Bronze Lion in Film Script at Cannes Lions 2026 — at the time India's only Lion that day.

What you can take

A boring product can anchor great ads if the story carries the benefit: keep the machine central but hidden until the reveal, and let the audience laugh all the way to the point.

Since then

The series turned Steadfast into a case study for selling functional B2B products with entertainment: the 'Dirty Money' film took a Film Craft Gold Lotus and a Silver at ADFEST 2026, and the 'Don't Look Up' script won a Bronze Lion in Film Script at Cannes Lions 2026. Coverage framed the work as proof that a great idea, not a bigger category, is what makes a business product resonate.
