Škoda's Dashboard Billboards turn rivals' reversing cameras into its ad space

Outgunned on big outdoor media, Škoda placed billboards in Sweden's parking lots that show up only on rivals' reversing-camera dashboards.

What it had to solve

Big car brands dominate big outdoor media while Škoda's budget is smaller than its larger competitors', so the brand needed a different way to earn attention.

How it works

Big car brands dominate big outdoor media, and Škoda, with a smaller budget than its larger competitors, could not win the visibility battle on their terms. The brand needed an alternative way to get attention — so it changed where attention happens.

Dashboard Billboards made competitors' dashboards a new media space. Škoda designed billboards to be seen through cars' reverse cameras and placed them in Sweden's largest parking lots: when a driver reversed into a space, a Škoda ad appeared on the car's built-in screen. An outdoor buy turned into an inside-car ad.

The trick was designing for the reverse-camera moment — a fixed view every parking driver has to watch. What looked like a conventional parking-lot placement was actually a screen that the bigger advertisers were not selling, inside the cars of competitors' customers.

The archive entry carries no sales figures; the case stands on the mechanism itself — competitors' own cars carried Škoda's message at the one moment their drivers had to look — and the work was preserved in D&AD's awards archive.

Why it lands

  • It converts a constraint — a smaller budget — into a reason to invent a medium nobody owns.
  • The reverse-camera moment is unavoidable: drivers parking must watch the screen, so the message can't be scrolled past or ignored.
  • Competitors' own vehicles become the delivery channel, which big-budget outdoor domination cannot pre-empt or outbid.
  • The message lands where it stings most: inside a rival's car, just as the rival's driver is looking at a screen.

What it did

The medium was the idea: an outdoor placement that surfaces only on a screen inside a competitor's car — a space no rival could buy — and the work entered the D&AD awards archive.

What you can take

A smaller advertiser wins not by outbidding giants on the same billboard but by moving the fight to a screen the giants ignore — the reversing driver's dashboard.

Since then

Dashboard Billboards was kept in the D&AD awards archive as an example of an underdog using the medium itself as the idea. Its durable point was not a number but the move: buying the exact screen a driver is already looking at — inside a competitor's car — where no rival media budget could follow.
