VW paints blind-spot cyclists nearly invisible with Black 3.0 — Loeries 2023 Grand Prix

Life-size cyclists painted with the blackest paint vanish in dealerships, dramatizing the blind spot and selling IQ.DRIVE's monitor

What it had to solve

Volkswagen's Blind Spot Monitor was an invisible safety feature competing for attention; South Africa has one of the world's highest road accident rates, and blind-spot objects are a daily, unseen hazard.

How it works

A blind spot is the one hazard a driver cannot see, which is exactly why it is dangerous — and why advertising a safety monitor for it is hard. Ogilvy Cape Town's answer was to dramatize the problem physically: life-size figures of the cyclists and delivery riders most often hidden in blind spots, painted with Black 3.0, a pigment so dark it absorbs nearly all light and strips the objects of definition.

The "invisible" installations stood in Volkswagen's busiest South African dealerships, launched during Motorcycle Awareness Month in May 2023. Once onlookers noticed something odd, an AR filter revealed the hidden figures and explained Blind Spot Monitor, part of the IQ.DRIVE safety system, which uses radar to detect what the driver cannot see.

The stunt converted an abstract feature into a felt experience: visits to the IQ.DRIVE safety site rose 32%, sales enquiries rose 19%, and the campaign reached an organic 53 million. It took the Grand Prix for Ambient Media at the Loeries 2023 and a Craft Gold for Art Direction.

Why it lands

  • It used the medium itself to demonstrate the problem — the installation behaved exactly like a real blind spot.
  • The spectacle made an invisible feature shareable: people photographed and argued about what they could not see.
  • Dealership placement put the demonstration beside the product and the sales conversation.
  • The Motorcycle Awareness Month timing anchored the stunt in a live national conversation.
  • AR gave the curiosity a payoff: reveal the hidden object, learn the feature, enquire.

What it did

The campaign drove +32% visits to the IQ.DRIVE safety site and +19% sales enquiries with 53 million organic reach, and won the Loeries 2023 Ambient Media Grand Prix plus a Craft Gold for Art Direction.

What you can take

When the problem is invisible, the most persuasive execution is one that makes it visible — the medium itself does the explaining.

Since then

The campaign was recognised internationally beyond the Loeries — it also received a LIA Finalist in Innovative Use of Billboard and D&AD archive placement. In South Africa it became a reference for product-feature storytelling, showing a safety technology through the very danger it addresses rather than through claims about it.
