What it had to solve

Savlon, ITC's antiseptic brand, knew that handwashing can prevent fatal diseases, but kids in the slums did not listen to hygiene advice. The one thing they did listen to was hip-hop.

How it works

Handwashing can prevent fatal diseases, but kids from the slums did not listen to the usual health messages. There was one thing they did listen to: hip-hop.

The observation underneath the campaign was that hip-hop artists across the world do the 'handrub', a move strikingly similar to handwashing. Savlon hacked that gesture and turned it into a handwashing move, then tagged hip-hop star Emiway Bantai — an idol to these kids — calling him a #HandwashLegend for always promoting 'handwashing' in his videos.

Bantai loved the framing and so did his fans. The hack was amplified with the music video 'Haath Dhona Cool Hai', which reached #1 on YouTube India, and the programme spread to 12,500 school programmes across India — turning a chore into an identity kids wanted to claim.

Why it lands

  • It started from the audience's own culture: the handrub move in hip-hop videos already looks like handwashing, so no new behaviour had to be invented.
  • Calling the rapper a #HandwashLegend reframed the habit as cool rather than corrective — a compliment instead of a scolding.
  • The music video distributed the idea through the channel kids already watch, while the school programmes gave the behaviour institutional reach.
  • The star embraced the joke himself, which let the campaign spread as fan culture rather than as an ad.

What it did

The music video reached #1 on YouTube India and the programme ran across 12,500 schools in India, per the campaign's account: a health habit smuggled into the culture the kids already follow.

What you can take

When the audience will not hear the health message, find the behaviour they already love and show them it is the same move — an idol's dance can carry a habit no lecture can.

Since then

The D&AD archive preserves 'Handwash Legend' as a Creator Content entry, listing Savlon as brand, ITC as client and Music Boutique as production company. What lasted was the reframe: handwashing presented as an identity kids want, carried by a music video that led YouTube India and by programmes that took the habit into 12,500 schools across India.
