Step-Grandma arrived as the latest Ganacci–Rupic collaboration, following cult absurdist videos like Horse and Boycycle. The brief was effectively to top their own formula: another single built on deadpan chaos with something sharper hiding beneath the slapstick.
The video inverts stranger danger. The deadpan Ganacci stalks a forgetful grandmother in the woods, gets a film camera dropped into his hands by a squirrel, photographs himself, and swaps the pictures on her wall for his own — so the confused old lady lets him in as family.
What could have been a threat becomes a plea: the stalker wants nothing more than to have a grandmother dote on him. Trade press greeted it on release as an instant best-of-the-year entry, and the work entered D&AD's awards archive under Music Videos.
Why it lands
- One reversal did the whole job: swapping the predator's motive from harm to affection turns a familiar fear into comedy.
